Two teams that prefer running the football, Head Coach Joe Moglia and the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers (-2) are gearing up to take on the South Alabama Jaguars at Ladd-Peebles Stadium. This conference game will get underway at 3:00 p.m. ET and fans can catch the action live on ESPN+.

Coastal Carolina Chanticleers at South Alabama Jaguars Betting Preview

South Alabama is entering this SBC game as the underdog and is currently getting 2 points. The Chanticleers are also receiving -130 moneyline odds while the Jaguars are +110. Vegas has placed the over/under (O/U) at 58.5 points. Should the favorites get behind early on, it’ll probably produce a nice live betting scenario.

The opening line was 1.5 while the total has not moved after it was initially set at 58.5.

The Chanticleers are down 0.6 units so far in 2018 and 5-6 against the spread (ATS). The team’s posted an O/U record of 5-5. The Jaguars have lost 5.0 units for moneyline bettors this season. They’re 4-6-1 ATS and the over has hit in eight of their games.

The Chanticleers are 5-6 straight up (SU), including 2-5 SU against SBC opponents. The Jaguars are 2-9 SU overall and are also 1-6 SU in conference play.

These two conference adversaries did not get a chance to play each other in 2017.

The Chanticleers dropped one to Georgia Southern 41-17 in a blowout where their defense allowed the Eagles to rush for 409 yards on 54 attempts, including five rush TDs. Wesley Fields had a productive day for the Eagles in that one with 148 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 20 attempts. On the offensive side of the ball, the Chanticleers completed 12-of-24 passes for 115 yards and two touchdowns. Fred Payton went eight-for-14 for 89 yards and one touchdown while Kilton Anderson completed four-of-10 for 26 yards and one touchdown. Torrance Marable (45 rushing yards on 12 attempts) and Alex James (37 yards on 10 carries) provided the running attack while Isaiah Likely (four receptions, 13 yards, two TDs) and Marable (three catches, 16 yards) manned the receiving duties in the defeat.

A week ago, Louisiana knocked off this South Alabama crew by a score of 48-38. The Jags defense let the Ragin’ Cajuns rush for 210 yards on 33 attempts, including three rush TDs. Elijah Mitchell put up a solid outing in the win, recording 104 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 12 attempts for Louisiana. For South Alabama, Cole Garvin completed 18-of-28 passes for 254 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. Tra Minter (87 rushing yards on 23 attempts, one TD) and the signal-caller Garvin (50 yards on 12 carries) led the running game while Jamarius Way (six receptions, 67 yards, one TD) and Kawaan Baker (four catches, 80 yards, one TD) led the pass-catching corps in the loss.

Coastal Carolina has run the ball on 67.6 percent of its offensive possessions this year while South Alabama has an overall rush percentage of 59.0 percent. The Chanticleers have produced 208 rush yards/game (including 180 per game versus Sun Belt opponents) and have 19 touchdowns on the ground this year. The Jags are totaling 136 rushing yards per game (129 in conference) and have 16 total rush TDs.

The Chanticleers offense has logged 170 yards/game through the air overall (162 per game versus conference opposition) and has 17 passing TDs so far. The Jags have recorded 203 pass yards per game (205.6 in the SBC) and have 16 total pass scores.

Defensively, Coastal Carolina seems to have the upper hand when it comes to limiting the pass. The team has allowed 237 rush yards and 207 pass yards per game. The South Alabama D has given up 241.4 yards per game to opposing passers and 213.1 yards per game on the ground. The Chanticleers are giving up an adjusted net yards per pass attempt (ANY/A) of 7.73 to opponents, while the Jags have allowed an 8.36 ANY/A.

Offensively, Payton has put up 531 passing yards this season. He’s connected on 38-of-57 attempts with four scores through the air and two interceptions. He’s got a 7.61 adjusted net yards per pass attempt, including 7.91 over the last two outings.

We expect the Chanticleers to control tempo by feeding their running backs early and often. Along with Jeremiah Miller (193 yards), Torrance Marable (620 rush yards, six rush TDs, 118 receiving yards, two receiving TDs) and Jacqez Hairston (77 rush yards) have been big focal points in the offensive scheme for Coastal Carolina.

Cole Garvin has managed to complete 28-of-50 passes for 318 yards, three TDs and three INTs for South Alabama. His ANY/A sits at an ultra-pedestrian 4.04 for the season and 6.56 across his last two games.

The Jags also like to keep their RBs involved. In addition to Tra Minter (148 receiving yards), Kawaan Baker (235 rush yards, eight rush TDs, 457 receiving yards, four receiving TDs) and Jamarius Way (one rush yards, 691 receiving yards, five TDs) have seen a multitude of touches lately.
