Every week, we will look into three of the top developing storylines in the country and offer our latest hot take.
Our three stories this week deal with, perhaps, the top front runner for the Player of the Year race, a disappointing start for an ACC power, and a Final Four darling from a year ago is starting to make his own name.
Virginia’s loss to George Washington is a sign of things to come:
Sell — Everyone knew there was going to be an adjustment period where UVA learned how to find secondary offensive options beyond Malcolm Brogdon. Now, we’ve seen the first slip up at the hands of a veteran, feisty George Washington club. I’m not going to get too concerned about this one, though, as Virginia has plenty of experience to bounce back from such a loss–plus, they’ve got one of the premier coaches in the country roaming their sideline.
Kris Dunn is the best point guard in the country:
Buy — Look, this kid can do absolutely everything. His opening night of 32 points, eight steals, six rebounds and five assists is beyond believable. It’s not realistic to think that he’ll keep this up, as his usage is sure to go down at some point, but there’s something to be said for being anointed as the best point guard in the country before a game is played, then coming out and proving it with your play.
Grayson Allen can lead Duke to a title:
Sell — Yes, he’s been fantastic through the young season. Yes, he was fantastic in last season’s Final Four. But can he keep this going for an entire season? I’m not saying he can’t continue to experience success, but if Duke is going to win a title this season, it will be due to the emergence of freshman superstar Brandon Ingram.
