The regular season has geared up for its final week before giving way to conference tournaments and ultimate the Big Dance, and its end didn’t come without any parting gifts. Four ranked teams went down over the weekend both at home and on the road, including one team with hopes of a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament.
Gonzaga was not able to hold off BYU, as they fell 73-70. The win puts the Cougars right back in the Bubble discussion, but likely knocks the Bulldogs off of their projected No. 1 seed, according to most bracketology projections.
Iowa State followed up a home loss to Baylor with a disappointing late game collapse on the road versus Kansas State. The Cyclones have now lost two straight, and sit two games back of Kansas in the Big 12 standings.
Boise State, winners of 12 out of their last 13 games, now sit atop the Mountain West standings thanks to their big time road win on the Mesa, over No. 24 San Diego State. The win keeps the Broncos in the discussion for the NCAA Tournament, and gives them a signature road win.
Across the country, the mighty Dayton Flyers took down No. 22 VCU in a win that further provides evidence pointing towards Archie Miller being one of the brightest young minds in the sport. Dayton isn’t just short on bodies in general, all this is being done without a single player over 6-foot-7.
Two other upsets went down over the weekend, with Oklahoma State continuing their free fall with a loss to Texas Tech and North Carolina State stumbling against Boston College. One has to wonder exactly where Travis Ford’s group sits at this point, while the Wolfpack appear to have done enough to withstand the bad loss.
