My powers to lose money with a college football parlay continue to be strong after I posted my sixth consecutive losing parlay last week. All it takes is one win to get back a significant chunk of the cash that I have lost though.
One of the bets I put in had no problem cashing. UAB proved that they were a much better team than Northern Illinois and thrashed the Huskies on their way to their first bowl victory. Tyler Johnston III had a fantastic day through the air, and he found Xavier Ubosi seven times for 227 yards and three touchdowns.
The other was … bad. Very bad. I told everyone I knew that North Texas was going to beat Utah State outright, and I liked my chances as the line continued to fall leading up to the game. However, North Texas’ defense was shredded by Utah State’s Jordan Love, and an injury to Mason Fine left the Mean Green with no ability to come back in a blowout loss.

The last time I put together a parlay like this, it blew up in my face. But let’s be honest. How many parlays haven’t blown up in my face this year?
Memphis has burned me a few times this year, but I am no longer trusting the Tigers to win or cover. Instead, I’m just going to count on them to score, and give up, a lot of points. This is one of the best offenses in the nation, and although home run hitter Darrell Henderson is sitting out the bowl game, they have plenty of offensive weapons. Both teams like to run their offenses at tempo, so I like my chances here.
I don’t see Army losing to Houston. I’m a little uncomfortable laying the five given Army’s history of playing close games, but the Black Knights should be able to control the clock and run for big chunks on Houston’s defense. The Cougars are missing Ed Oliver and a number of other starters in the front seven, and that is not a good sign when you’re about to play a team that runs the triple option as well as Army.
BYU shouldn’t have any trouble with Western Michigan either. Although weird things happen in bowl season, this is just a bad match-up. The Broncos won’t be able to stop the Cougars’ running game, and BYU’s front seven should be able to get a lot of pressure on Kaleb Eleby.
Finally, the Hawaii Bowl has to be included in any parlay this time of year. Staying up late, drinking egg nog, and wrapping presents while watching the Hawaii Bowl is a tradition, and you have to have a bet on the game to be doing it right. Hawaii is back to running the run and shoot too, and I think Skip Holtz will let it all hang out when these two teams face off. The over is the fun bet and the right bet here.
