College Football: Ranked Teams On Upset Alert For Week 6

TCU Horned Frogs

While Alabama, Clemson, Penn State and Washington continued to roll over the weekend, USC was the latest upset victim after its perfect season ended with a loss to Washington. There are a number of top 25 college football teams that will be on upset alert in Week 6 with a familiar Big 10 rivalry in the spotlight once again. Here is a look at four ranked teams that will be on upset alert in Week 6.

#12 Auburn vs. Ole Miss

Saturday, 12:00 PM ET

Auburn is coming off a 39-point win over Mississippi State and will get Ole Miss at home as a 21-point favorite. Kerryon Johnson has been an absolute beast in Gus Malzahn’s offense with eight touchdowns in two games but they can’t afford to let their foot off the gas pedal this week. Ole Miss is coming off a brutal loss to Alabama but should be motivated to show up as double-digit underdogs for the second week in a row. The Rebels might not win this college football game but it shouldn’t be a surprise if they stick around and cover the 21-point spread.

Pick: Ole Miss +21

#8 TCU vs. #23 West Virginia

Saturday, 3:30 PM ET

TCU survived a tough test against Oklahoma State with a 44-31 win two weeks ago. Now they will return home to face another tough test with No. 23 West Virginia visiting this weekend. The Horned Frogs defense did just enough  to escape Stillwater with a win over a tough opponent but they will need another strong effort this week in order to beat the Mountaineers. Led by Will Grier, the Mountaineers have one of the best passing games in the country. West Virginia is capable of scoring points in bunches – as evidenced by the fact that they’ve scored at least 56 in three straight games – and should throw everything they have at TCU in a key Big 12 showdown on Saturday.

Pick: West Virginia +12.5

#21 Florida vs. LSU

Saturday, 3:30 PM ET

A convincing win over Vanderbilt has some Gators fans breathing a sigh of relief. However, Florida didn’t look elite in wins over Tennessee and Kentucky and now they face an LSU side that is desperate for a signature win. The Tigers looked terrible in their upset loss to Troy and quite frankly, they’ve looked terrible all season long. But that should only serve as added motivation as they attempt to bounce back on the road this week. Head coach Ed Orgeron is facing a lot of heat right now, so expect a better effort from LSU on the road in this week’s SEC showdown. In most scenarios, we’d say avoid betting the Tigers but the Gators haven’t exactly looked that crisp either. They had a one-point win at Kentucky, a six-point win at home to Tennessee and had to fight to put away Vanderbilt last week. Although LSU is struggling, Florida is quite vulnerable. This college football game will be a challenge.

Pick: LSU +5

#7 Michigan vs. Michigan State

Saturday, 7:30 PM ET

Jim Harbaugh talked about the importance of using an idle week to make improvements on both sides of the football ahead of a key clash with the rival Spartans. Michigan is the better team but there have been plenty of upsets in this historic rivalry so it’s impossible to completely write off the visitors heading in to this matchup. Michigan State looked much better against Iowa than expected with quarterback Brian Lewerke throwing for two touchdowns and no interceptions. Remember, this is a program that’s coming off a disaster of a season last year and was supposed to be rebuilding. However, they are maybe further along in the process than most give them credit for. As mentioned, they beat Iowa at home and have now won three of their first four games. Their only loss was a 38-18 setback at home to Notre Dame.

Michigan has high aspirations this season. They also have had an extra week to prepare. The Wolverines should find a way to win this game but it will likely be a lot closer than the betting line for this matchup indicates. An outright loss would be disastrous for Jim Harbaugh and company.

Pick: Michigan State +13.5
