Colts vs. Jets Preview and Prediction

The Indianapolis Colts season hasn’t gone as planned, but nothing is lost just yet. That’s because they play in the AFC South, which is arguably the weakest division in the NFL. The Colts, at 5-6, are still just one game behind the Houston Texans, who lead the division at 6-5. On top of that, those two teams will square off in two weeks’ time, so the Colts still control their own destiny.

But before they jump ahead, it’s important they focus on what’s in front of them: a road trip to New York to face the Jets. The Colts have been a lousy road team so far this season with just two wins in five away games. The good news is that the New York Jets are just 1-4 at home this season.

On The Colts Side of the Ball (5-6 Record, 5-5-1 ATS)

The Colts struggled last week without Andrew Luck in the huddle as Scott Tolzien was clearly a big step down. The offense wasn’t able to move the ball through the air as fluidly and they ended up getting blown out. The good news is that Luck will be back this week after practicing the last few days. Of other injury concern, the Colts should have top wideout T.Y. Hilton back in the lineup after he exited last week’s game. He is dealing with a back injury but practiced on Wednesday.

The Colts defense was torched by Antonio Brown and Le’Veon Bell last week and while the Jets don’t have the same quality weapons that the Steelers did they do have enough talent to expose the Indianapolis defense.

On The Jets Side of the Ball (3-8 Record, 4-7 ATS)

Many thought that the Jets would be a playoff contender this season but they have really disappointed with a 3-8 start to the season. Ryan Fitzpatrick has been a turnover-machine and while he didn’t have any interceptions in last week’s loss to the New England Patriots he did have a late fumble that sealed his team’s fate. New York will turn back to Fitzpatrick this week as they look to stretch the Indianapolis defense with Brandon Marshall and Quincy Enunwa. The Jets have enough talent to put up some decent totals but they simply need more out of Fitzpatrick. Meanwhile, the New York defense held up fairly well by limiting Tom Brady and the Patriots to 22 points last week and a similar effort versus could go a long way towards the Jets ending a three-game slide this week.

Quick Analysis

Despite a 4-7 record against the spread overall, the Jets are 2-3 ATS at home and primed to get back to the .500 mark ATS this week if they can play to their potential. Indianapolis is just 2-3 on the road this season but they’ve been very competitive away from home. They’ve won two straight on the road (at Green Bay and at Tennessee) and their three road losses were close. They fell by three points at Jacksonville and three points at Houston (in overtime).

Prediction

The Jets played one of their best games of the season last week but they still lost to the New England Patriots. In some cases, this might be a spot where they could build on that but this looks like more of a letdown spot for them. They really put their all in last week’s affair against a rival and lost, and now they don’t have much to play for against the Colts. As for Indy, they’re sitll in the thick of things in terms of the playoff race, so look for them to bring a much better effort than last week.

Pick: Colts -1
