Chicago Cubs pitcher Jon Lester didn’t agree with the umpire’s call on a ball four in the second inning of yesterday’s game against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Which happens a lot. What doesn’t happen much is the umpire losing his ever-loving mind.
Ump Andy Fletcher charged the mound after the ball-four call to the Dodgers’ A.J. Ellis, when all it looked like Lester did was curse, which is his right as an American. Fletcher came at Lester demanding satisfaction, only to be stopped by Cubs catcher David Ross, then manager Joe Madden.
After the game reporters asked Lester what he said to piss the umpire off. Lester had no clue.
“I didn’t say anything directed to him,” Lester said. “I don’t know why he was upset. I had my head down when I was yelling. It doesn’t have anything to do with the umpire’s strike zone, I have to execute better.”
I’ve never seen anything like that before on any level and Fletcher should face some discipline for acting like such a moron.
The Dodgers won the game 4-0. Fletcher should hopefully expect a call from the league office sometime soon, right before Vince McMahon tries to sign him to the WWE.
