Dallas (-150) is currently the favorite over Detroit (+130) and the oddsmakers have set the Over/Under (O/U) at 6 goals (-105 for the over, -115 for the under).
Dallas is 5-4 straight up (SU) and has lost 0.3 units for moneyline bettors this year. That early-season SU winning percentage is right in line with the 42-40 record the team produced during the 2017-18 season campaign. Through nine regular season outings, Four of its games have gone over the total, while another four have gone under and just one has pushed. As the away team in 2018-19, the Stars are 0-2 SU.
The Stars have scored on 29.6 percent of their power play chances thus far. That’s a nice step forward from last season, when they were ranked 19th in the league by converting on 19.3 percent of their extra-man advantages. Their penalty kill has also gotten stronger since last year, as they’ve gone from successfully defending 80.9 percent of all opponent power plays (ranked 13th overall last season) to 84.0 percent this year.
The Stars, as a collective unit, have been penalized 4.0 times per game this season. Last year, that figure was the fourth-worst mark in the league at 4.2 penalties per game. After serving an average of 10.1 penalty minutes per game a season ago the team has had to stave off opponent power plays for 9.0 minutes per matchup this year.
Averaging 27.4 saves per game with a .923 save percentage, Ben Bishop (4-3) has been the primary option in goal for Dallas this year. If head coach Jim Montgomery chooses to rest him, however, Dallas may go with Anton Khudobin (1-1 record, .898 save percentage, 3.02 goals against average).
Tyler Seguin and Alexander Radulov will both spearhead the attack for the visiting Stars. Seguin has 11 points on three goals and eight assists this season; Radulov has four goals and six assists to his credit through the early stages of the regular season.
Detroit is 1-9 straight up (SU) and has already lost 7.3 units for moneyline bettors this year. Through 10 regular season matches, five of its games have gone over the total, while another five have gone under and none have pushed. It’s 0-4 SU at home this year.
The Red Wings have converted on just 25.0 percent of their power play opportunities this season, a mark that’s right around league average. On the other hand, its penalty kill is ranked 14th overall, and it’s successfully killed off 80.5 percent of all opponent power plays.
Red Wings players have been whistled for penalties 5.2 times per game this season, a number that’s climbed noticeably from the 3.7 penalties per game given up last year. After serving an average of 9.0 penalty minutes per game a year ago, the team has had to kill penalties for a whopping 12.5 minutes per outing this season.
Jimmy Howard has stopped 30.3 shots per game as the top choice in goal for the Red Wings. Howard has one win, seven losses, and two OT losses to his name and has registered a .913 save percentage and 3.07 goals against average this year.
The Wings will be led on offense by Dylan Larkin (four goals, three assists) and Gustav Nyquist (one goals, six assists).
