If there was one thing that Denzel Valentine’s triple-double against Kansas proved, it’s that the preseason All-American is more than ready to lead Michigan State among the nation’s elite.
With the Spartan’s comeback in the second half, and subsequent win over the Jayhawks, all doubt was removed as to whether or not Tom Izzo’s veteran core could challenge for another Final Four berth. After all, that’s what knocking off the No. 4 team in the country will do for you.
Valentine, in particular, was magical. Though he has always been a do-it-all type, his 29 points, 12 rebounds, 12 assists performance reminded everyone just how special he can be. With the ball in his hands, his ability to make plays for himself as well as others may be unparalleled. But what does this mean moving forward?
First, he appears to have been given the full reigns to MSU’s offense. This means he projects to continue his scoring ways, while also having the freedom to create at will. Second, it means that these responsibilities have not taken away from his merits as, perhaps, the best rebounding wing in college basketball.
Tuesday’s triple-double won’t be his last such effort this season and if there was ever a time to whole heartedly jump on the Valentine bandwagon, it’s right now. But be quick about it, this coming out party has finally exposed him to the level of audience that should have been paying attention in the first place, so not only will the wagon be crowded, but it will be more expensive than ever for admission.
