Derek Jeter’s master plan to swoop in and fix the Miami Marlins has gone horribly awry, according to … Derek Jeter. The Reds’ attempt to hang on to an 8-0 lead against the Giants also went south, as did the Yankees’ desperate attempt to keep their stars healthy, and the Cardinals’ attempt to make Cubs pitcher Kyle Hendricks work in the opener of their big series in Chicago this weekend. But elsewhere in the Windy City, the Red Sox’s Chris Sale looked his old self for the first time this year.
Everyone thought Yankees great Derek Jeter would swoop in and fix the moribund Marlins because he’s always won. Well, now he hasn’t always won. At least not yet.

Many times when it’s 8-0, you start seeing teams put backups in and give key players a rest in a game that’s already been decided. Well, the Giants decided this one hadn’t yet been decided.

Chris Sale has been awful thus far for the Red Sox, but he turned things around at the home of his old team, the White Sox.

On the north side of the city, the Cubs opened up a big series with the division-leading Cardinals behind an efficient performance from Kyle Hendricks. Who throws a complete game in 81 pitches anymore?
81 pitches. Complete game shutout. Fewest pitches in a nine-inning complete game since 2012.

The Yankees were finally set to get some of their injured players back … and then they lost another top starting pitcher as James Paxton hits the IL. The beat goes on.
