DI Council reviews transfer plans

The package that the committee first assessed last month was subject to certain amendments, which the Division I Council considered. On Wednesday, the Council virtually convened. The academic eligibility exemption was taken into consideration by the Council, which would let undergraduate student-athletes transfer and become eligible right away if they leave their previous institution in good standing and would be academically eligible at the new school prior to competition.

Members acknowledged the impact of name, image, and likeness options on the transfer environment and explored potential issues with the modifications, including the academic impact on students who transfer more than once. The Council admitted that the waiver procedure, which has angered some members, will persist until transfer rules are changed.

The Division I Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and the Council both agreed that a fall notification-of-transfer window for spring student-athletes would be acceptable. The Council continues to support the transfer window concept. The Council will soon assess the length of transfer periods and duration.
