Doncic and the Mavericks are experiencing growing pains

Luka Doncic evaluated the situation through a long-term lens after his Dallas Mavericks were on the verge of elimination in the Western Conference finals. Doncic scored a game-high 40 points in the Mavericks’ 109-100 Game 3 defeat to the Golden State Warriors on Sunday, including 21 in a futile fourth-quarter comeback attempt. In addition, he had the game’s worst plus-minus, as Dallas was outscored by 19 points during Doncic’s 40 minutes on the court, and the Warriors went up 3-0 in the series while continuing to target him effectively on the defensive end.

Doncic accepted responsibility for the defeat that placed the Mavs in danger of being swept in their first conference finals trip since the 2011 championship season. Doncic’s club is now 2-6 when he scores 40 or more points in a playoff game during his career. Doncic, who also collected 11 rebounds, three assists, and two blocks, stated, “I’m still learning. In the first two quarters, I performed poorly. That’s my fault. But I’m still learning. I believe that when this season is through, regardless of who we are, we will reflect and learn a great deal. This is my first NBA conference finals appearance. I’m a 23-year-old guy. I am still learning a great deal.”
