English Premier League Power Rankings For Round 9

EPL

The EPL season is threatening to become a rout as Manchester City are far and away the favorites after another mesmerizing performance. The latest English Premier League standings show that Manchester City is at the top of the league with 22 points in eight games. They have collected 22 points out of a possible 24 points. Not far behind is Manchester United, who has 20 points. Tottenham is in third place with 17.

The rest of the league is simply trying to keep up, while the defending champions from Chelsea are looking to avoid a total meltdown.

1. Manchester City

Last Week: 1

EPL Title Odds: -250

City is atop the table by themselves after a 7-2 mauling of Stoke City at home as Gabriel Jesus led the onslaught with a pair of goals. Raheem Sterling, David Silva, Fernandinho, Leroy Sane and Bernardo Silva all got on the scoresheet for City, who also had bad luck for their two allowed goals, including an own goal from Kyle Walker. Still, it might have been the best performance of any team this season as City now gears up for a Tuesday game at home against Napoli in the Champions League, and then they stay home to host Burnley on Saturday.

2. Manchester United

Last Week: 2

EPL Title Odds: +400

United are second after a 0-0 draw at Liverpool in which they looked content to come away with a single point, but they’re still three points clear of third-place Tottenham. David De Gea made a couple of stunning saves for United, who are now on the road for three games, the first of which comes on Wednesday at Benfica in the Champions League, and then they’ll head to Huddersfield Town on Saturday. Maybe they can find some of their attacking verve back in either of these games.

3. Tottenham

Last Week: 4

EPL Title Odds: +1400

Tottenham are trying to keep pace with the Manchester clubs as they won 1-0 at home against Bournemouth thanks to a second-half goal from Christian Eriksen. It was Spurs’ first home win of the season at Wembley Stadium where they’ll play this season until their new stadium is built. This is a massive week for Tottenham, who will visit Real Madrid in the Champions League on Tuesday, and then they’ll return home to host Liverpool in what is definitely an important match for both teams.

4. Chelsea

Last Week: 3

EPL Title Odds: +1400

Chelsea slipped in a 2-1 loss at Crystal Palace as Tiemoue Bakayoko scored, but it wasn’t enough to make up for an own goal from Cesar Azpilicueta. Chelsea looked lost with N’Golo Kante and Alvaro Morata both out of the lineup with hamstring injuries, and those two won’t be back any time soon. Chelsea will host Roma in the Champions League on Wednesday, and then they’ll host Watford on Saturday in Premier League action.

5. Arsenal

Last Week: 5

EPL Title Odds: +3300

Arsenal is sixth in the table, one spot below Chelsea, after a 2-1 loss at Watford. Per Mertesacker found the net for the Gunners, who gave up a late winner and to be honest, they didn’t deserve to win this game. They cowered when the game got tough and opposing players said as much, and now they have a tough week ahead off them as Arsenal heads to Red Star Belgrade in the Europa League on Thursday, and then they’ll stay on the road on Sunday as Arsenal heads to Everton.

6. Liverpool

Last Week: 6

EPL Title Odds: +4000

Liverpool is eighth after their 0-0 draw at home with Manchester United in which they were the better team, but they couldn’t break down a United team that was determined to defend. It was a solid enough performance in defending from Liverpool, one of their best of the season, but United didn’t really want to be bothered with going at them. Liverpool will travel to NK Maribor on Wednesday in the Champions League, and then they have a big trip to Tottenham on Sunday.

7. Watford

Last Week: 9

EPL Title Odds: +7500

Watford sits fourth in the table after their huge 2-1 win at home against Arsenal as Troy Deeney (who made some comments about Arsenal not having any nerve following the game) scored from the penalty spot, and then Tom Cleverley scored in injury time. Watford probably won’t finish in the top four, or even in a European spot, but they’re an extremely difficult team to play against because of their physical style, and they’re going to be a problem for any team in the league outside of Manchester City and maybe United. Watford will visit Chelsea on Saturday.

8. Burnley

Last Week: 8

EPL Title Odds: +10000

Burnley is seventh in the table after a 1-1 draw at home with West Ham in which they failed to take full advantage of having an extra man for more than 65 minutes. Chris Wood scored in the 85th minute for Burnley, who are struggling to score goals as they’re the only team in the top eight not to have hit the double-digit mark yet. That is going to be an issue going forward if they want to seriously challenge for the top half of the table, but they face a very tough task on Saturday as they head to Manchester City.

9. Newcastle

Last Week: 10

EPL Title Odds: +10000

Newcastle is ninth in the table after a 2-2 draw at Southampton as Isaac Hayden and Ayoze Perez both scored, but Newcastle will be disappointed to lose a one-goal lead on two occasions. Newcastle is another team that needs to start scoring goals as they have just nine through their first eight games of the season as they will be at home on Saturday to host Crystal Palace.

10. Southampton

Last Week: —

EPL Title Odds: +10000

Southampton is one spot behind Newcastle in the table as they got a pair of goals from Manolo Gabbiadini to stay in the top half. Again, goals are going to be the issue for Southampton, who have just seven goals in their first eight games. That is not something that is going to keep them in the top half for long as they will host West Brom on Saturday.
