Leicester’s win streak had to come to an end eventually but while they finally faltered in a 1-0 loss to Liverpool, they still remain atop the Premier League table following Arsenal’s stunning 4-0 defeat at the hands of Southampton. It’ s no surprise that nobody from Leicester or Arsenal is featured on the following list as we take a look at the best individual EPL fantasy performances by position from this past weekend.
GK: Jack Butland, Stoke City
Crystal Palace’s Wayne Hennessey and Liverpool’s Simon Mignolet were both outstanding for their respective clubs over the weekend but it was Butland who edged out both of them for top fantasy goalkeeper honors this past weekend. Butland made six saves to preserve the clean sheet in Stoke’s 2-0 win over Manchester United and in the process he may very well have tied the ribbon on Louis van Gaal’s seemingly imminent departure from Old Trafford. Stoke City has now moved up to ninth in the English Premier League table with 29 points, which ties them with West Ham and Watford.
Honorable Mention: Wayne Hennessey, Crystal Palace; Simon Mignolet, Liverpool
D: Jose Fonte, Southampton
Southampton was firing on all cylinders in its shocking 4-0 win over Gunners and even the defense were involved as Fonte and his teammate Cuco Martina were both among the top fantasy performers art their position this past weekend. Fonte led the way with a goal on his only shot on net and the combination of his play at both ends of the floor led to him earning top fantasy honors among all Premier League defenders for EPL fantasy this past weekend.
Honorable Mention: Cuco Martina, Southampton; Ben Davies, Tottenham; Glen Johnson, Stoke City
M: Kevin De Bruyne, Manchester City
With Leicester and Arsenal both faltering it was City’s turn to make its push toward the top of the table with a big 4-1 win over Sunderland in which De Bruyne was absolutely brilliant. The star midfielder had a goal and two assists with three shots and by the time the game was finished there was no doubt that De Bruyne was the top fantasy performer of the weekend regardless of position.
M: Tom Cleverley, Everton
Swansea’s Sung-yeung Ki and City’s Yaya Toure both registered strong fantasy performances but it was Cleverley who slightly edged out both of them for the second-best fantasy performance among Premier League midfielders this past weekend as he scored the game-winning goal in a 1-0 win over Newcastle United. Everton looked well on its way to a fifth straight game without a win before Cleverley delivered for them in the third minute of second-half added time and that marker alone was enough for him to rank as the second-best fantasy midfielder.
Honorable Mention: Sung-yeung Ki, Swansea; Yaya Toure, Manchester City; Roberto Firmino, Liverpool
F: Harry Kane, Tottenham
Spurs’ 3-0 win over Norwich pushed them to sole possession of fourth place in the table and it was a familiar face that led the way for them again as Kane scored twice including the game-winning goal in a penalty shot in the 26th minute. Kanes has really turned things around following a slow start to the season and it’s clear he is back as on of the most lethal strikers in the Premier League with 11 goals in 18 matches.
F: Diego Costa, Chelsea
It was only a matter of time before Costa produced for the Blues and while his two goals weren’t enough to help Chelsea earn three points it did get them a point in a 2-2 draw with Watford. Costa delivered for the Blues in the 32nd minute and then again in the 65th minute to finally make his return to this list as one of the top fantasy performers at his position from this past weekend in the Premier League.
Honorable Mention: Shane Long, Southampton; Bojan Krkic, Stoke City; Jordan Ayew, Aston Villa
