Leicester City’s march towards the Premier League title hit the smallest of speed bumps with a 2-2 draw with West Ham United that opened the door for Tottenham to remain in the hunt for top spot. Manchester City and Liverpool were the big winners this past weekend and both sides were well represented from a fantasy perspective. Here is a look at the top individual performances by position in EPL fantasy this past weekend.
GK: Heurelho Gomes, Watford
After ending its winless skid with a 1-1 draw versus Everton last week, Watford took another step in the right direction with a 1-0 win over West Brom this past weekend thanks in big part to their goalkeeper. Gomes made four saves to preserve the clean sheet victory and edge out Vito Mannone and Joe Hart for top fantasy honors at his position this past weekend in EPL fantasy
Honorable Mention: Vito Mannone, Sunderland; Joe Hart, Manchester City
D: Jamaal Lascelles, Newcastle
Newcastle stole the role of biggest surprise performance this past weekend with a 3-0 win over Swansea that caught a lot of experts off guard. The victory was clearly the result of a complete performance at all three levels but it was Lascelles that played a starring role at their back end with the game-winning goal. Newcastle is still in the danger zone, though, as they are currently sitting in 19th place with just 28 points. They have allowed a whopping 61 goals so far this season, which is the second-most in the EPL.
Honorable Mention: Antonio Valencia, Manchester United; Ramiro Funes Mori, Everton; Aaron Creswell, West Ham
M: Andros Townsend, Newcastle
Townsend registered the best fantasy score for Newcastle United and the best score at his position with a goal, an assist and three shots on target in the 3-0 win. Townsend has been on fire over the past couple of weeks with two goals and two assists over his last three Premier League games and he is among the biggest reasons Newcastle finally broke through with an upset win. Newcastle has scored just 35 times in 33 games this season, so the three-goal outburst was a sight for sore eyes.
M: Roberto Firmino, Liverpool
Liverpool has been one of the most inconsistent teams out of the group that many predicted would contend for a Premier League title this season but they scored an impressive 2-1 win over Bournemouth on Sunday thanks to a great performance by Firmino in the midfield. Firmino had a goal and four shots to edge out Yannick Bolasie and Sadio Mane for the second-best EPL fantasy score among midfielders.
Honorable Mention: Yannick Bolasie, Crystal Palace; Sadio Mane, Southampton; Ben Watson, Watford
F: Sergio Aguero, Manchester City
It might be a case of too little, too late for Manchester City in the Premier League but Aguero was incredible with a hat trick in a 3-0 win over Chelsea. Aguero opened the scoring in the 33rd minute, added another in the 54th minute and then completed the hat trick with a penalty kick goal in the 80th minute to put the Blues away and finish off the best fantasy score of the weekend in the Premier League regardless of position. Man City is now in third place and in danger of falling lower to fourth. They have 60 points in a tie with Arsenal.
F: Daniel Sturridge, Liverpool
Sturridge was the star up front for Liverpool and he certainly didn’t hold back as he finished with 10 shots in Sunday’s win over Bournemouth. That included three that actually hit the target and one that found the back of the net for the game-winning goal as Sturridge did just enough to edge out Fabio Borini and Leonardo Ulloa among Premier League forwards in EPL fantasy tournaments. Liverpool is now in a tie for seventh place in the EPL standings. They have played just 32 games, though, which is the least amount in the EPL so far this season. That means they have at least one game in hand on most teams and in some cases, two.
Honorable Mention: Fabio Borini, Sunderland; Leonardo Ulloa, Leicester; Marcus Rashfor, Manchester United
