It was an exciting weekend in the Premier League with Arsenal and Manchester United both picking up important wins but no victory was bigger than Liverpool’s win over Tottenham. The reds earned a crucial three points and the gap between second and sixth in the standings is now down to just two points. Here is a look at the top individual EPL fantasy performances by position from this past week in the Premier League.
GK: Petr Cech, Arsenal
Arsenal maintained its lead for the third spot in the table ahead of Liverpool by a single point thanks in big part to a brilliant performance by their veteran goalkeeper in a 2-0 win over Hull City. Cech turned aside all four shots he faced to secure the clean sheet victory and finish with the best fantasy score of any Premier League goalkeeper this past weekend.
Arsenal exits the week now tied for third place in the English Premier League. They have been a solid source for EPL fantasy as they have scored 54 goals so far this season. That’s tied for the most in the league so far this season.
Honorable Mention: David De Gea, Manchester United; Simon Mignolet, Liverpool
D: Alfie Mawson, Swansea
Swansea’s defensive core was absolutely brilliant in their 2-0 win over Leicester City, combining to score each of their two goals while holding the defending Premier League champions to just one shot on target. Martin Olsson and Federico Fernandez both earned honorable mentions this week, but it was Mawson that delivered the top fantasy performance with the game-winning goal on his lone shot and a bonus for the clean sheet victory.
Swansea is not typically a team that we see here in our EPL fantasy recaps as they’ve been fairly weak this season. They have given up 54 goals, which is the most in the EPL this season. However, they had a great matchup against Leicester City – the EPL champs – but they are in a world of hurt these days. Leicester City is just one point outside of the relegation zone.
Honorable Mention: Ryan Bertrand, Southampton; Martin Olsson, Swansea; Federico Fernandez, Swansea
M: Sadio Mane, Liverpool
Mane scored each of Liverpool’s two goals and fired four shots in total to help the reds produce a 2-0 win over Tottenham. Mane was clearly the best player on the field in the critical match and the biggest reason for Liverpool closing the gap to a single point on the rival Spurs with a critical three points in the standigns.
M: Alexis Sanchez, Arsenal
Sanchez was the offensive catalyst for Arsenal in their 2-0 win over Hull City as he opened the scoring in the 34th minute and then added an insurance marker via penalty kick in the third minute of second half injury time. The double combined with a strong performance from Cech in goal was more than enough to help the Gunners earn an important three points.
Honorable Mention: Manuel Lanzini, West Ham United; Anthony Martial, Manchester United; Sofiane Feghouli, West Ham
F: Manolo Gabbiadini, Southampton
Southampton made the most of its date with Sunderland in a 4-0 win thanks to a brilliant performance from Gabbiadini up front. Gabbiadini scored two goals on five shots including the game-winning marker to easily secure the top fantasy score among Premier League strikers this past weekend.
Southampton has rarely been on our EPL fantasy lists this season – especially for offense – as they’ve managed just 28 goals so far this season. Only five teams in the EPL have scored less than them. However, they had a good week against Sunderland. They are now tied for 11th place in the standings with Burnley FC and Watford, as each of those teams have 30 points.
F: Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Manchester United
Anthony Martial’s goal and assist weren’t enough for him to earn more than an honorable mention among his fellow midfielders but Ibrahimovic made the list with the second-best score among forwards after he registered an assist with seven shots on target.
Honorable Mention: Shane Long, Southampton; Lucas Perez, Arsenal; Andre Gray, Burnley
