The battle is on for second place as Manchester City continues to run away with the league, setting records along the way. They currently have 58 points, which is incredible through 20 games. They’ve won all but one of their contests. That means they’ve opened up a 15 point lead already, which might be insurmountable. Manchester United has 43 points while Manchester City has 42.
However, just nine points separates second place from sixth place, and the transfer window is getting ready to open up on January 1st. One of the top teams have already made a big splash.
1. Manchester City
EPL Title Odds: -10000
Manchester City now has a 15-point lead atop the table as they routed Bournemouth 4-0 at home thanks to two goals from Sergio Aguero, along with singles from Raheem Sterling and Danilo. Sterling then notched the winner in a 1-0 win at Newcastle as Manchester City extended their record for consecutive Premier League wins to 18. Defender Vincent Kompany will join John Stones on the injury list, which is no surprise, but Manchester City have a cushion in the league. They’ll head to Crystal Palace this week and then host Watford.
2. Manchester United
EPL Title Odds: +6600
Juan Mata scored twice as Manchester United gave up a late injury-time goal for a 2-2 draw at Leicester City, then needed two goals from Jesse Lingard to come back for a 2-2 draw at home with Burnley. They’ll host Southampton next and then head to Everton. While it was always going to be tough to catch Manchester City, it is now almost impossible for Manchester United to do so and with those four dropped points, the rest of the field has caught up to them.
3. Chelsea
EPL Title Odds: +10000
Chelsea are a point behind Manchester United after a 0-0 draw at Everton, and then they beat Brighton and Hove Albion 2-0 at home behind goals from Alvaro Morata and Marcos Alonso. Chelsea will host Stoke City, and then head to Arsenal. Chelsea hasn’t played great at all this season, but they’re hanging on and have already beaten Manchester United this season. Second place is definitely not out of their reach, not by a longshot.
4. Liverpool
EPL Title Odds: +15000
Liverpool are four points behind Chelsea after a pulsating 3-3 draw at Arsenal in which Philippe Coutinho, Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah all scored, but they also allowed three goals in a five-minute span in the second half. But they were rampant in a 5-0 thrashing of Swansea City at home as Firmino scored twice, while Coutinho, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain all scored. Liverpool also added Virgil van Dijk from Southampton for over $100 million, which is a world record for a defender. That is a lot, but if he can help Liverpool at the back, they could be almost as scary as Manchester City. He will be eligible to play for Liverpool on Monday against Burnley when the transfer window opens.
5. Tottenham
EPL Title Odds: +25000
Tottenham are a point behind Liverpool as they thumped Burnley 3-0 away with Harry Kane scoring a hat trick, including one from the penalty spot. He hit three more in a 5-2 win at home over Southampton to break Alan Shearer’s record for goals in a calendar year with 39, while Dele Alli and Son Heung-Min also scored for Tottenham. Spurs now have a seven-day break until they play at Swansea City. It has been a fantastic year for Kane, who has 18 goals this season to lead the Premier League.
6. Arsenal
EPL Title Odds: +35000
Arsenal are three points behind their rivals from Tottenham after their 3-3 draw at home with Liverpool , and they’re on the road at Crystal Palace and West Brom before hosting Chelsea this week. Alexis Sanchez, Granit Xhaka and Mesut Ozil all scored for Arsenal, who couldn’t hold Liverpool off, but that is proving to be a tough task. Arsenal continues to battle for a European spot and they’re not far off.
7. Leicester City
EPL Title Odds: +200000
Leicester sits in eighth place in the table after their 2-2 draw with Manchester United at home in which Jamie Bardy scored and then Harry Maguire added the equalizer in injury time for Leicester, who were down a player thanks to a red card. Riyah Mahrez scored for Leicester at Watford, but a Kasper Schmeicher own goal led to a 2-1 loss. Now, the real tough part of the season begins for Leicester, who visit Liverpool and host Huddersfield Town this week. They have to ward off suitors for Mahrez during the transfer period.
8. Everton
EPL Title Odds: +200000
Everton are tied on points with Leicester City after 0-0 draws at home against Chelsea and at West Brom. They’ll travel to Bournemouth next and then host Manchester United. Everton are now unbeaten in seven games since Sam Allardyce took over as manager with four wins and three draws, but you could say that they were outplayed in both games and while the Chelsea game is fair, Everton shouldn’t be getting outplayed by West Brom, no matter if it was away from home.
9. Burnley
EPL Title Odds: +250000
Burnley couldn’t stop Harry Kane in their 3-0 loss at home to Tottenham, and they should feel like thy dropped points in their 2-2 draw at Manchester United as Ashley Barnes scored early and Steven Defour found the back of the net with a wonderful free kick. However, they sat back and soaked up too much pressure, and eventually you’re going to allow a goal. Still, Burnley are seventh in the table, one point behind Arsenal, and they have almost secured their safety for next season, which is a success.
10. Watford
EPL Title Odds: +300000
Watford fell 1-0 at Brighton and Hove Albion, then won 2-1 at home over Leicester City as Molla Wague scored and then they got an own goal from Leicester’s Schmeichel. They’ll host Swansea City next, and then they’ll have their hands full going to Manchester City. Watford are 10th in the table, just two points behind Leicester and Everton and this is another team that can say they have been successful so far heading into 2018.
