Manchester United continued its dominant start to the Premier League season with another lopsided win over Swansea City in Week 2. It’s still early, but United’s potential to contend for a league title appears to be legitimate following a pair of incredible outings. United is one of just three teams to open the season with consecutive wins. However, the other two sides to accomplish that feat aren’t exactly considered legitimate challengers in England’s top flight with West Brom and Huddersfield Town also perfect through two weeks. Here is a look at the top five power rankings in the EPL for this week.
1. Manchester City
Last Week: 1
Premier League Championship Odds: +125
City needs a win over Everton on Monday in order to keep pace with United and company at the top of the table. At this point, a loss won’t be enough to knock them out of top spot in the power rankings just yet. The preseason favorites to win a Premier League championship this season are once again loaded from top to bottom with Sergio Aguero and Kevin De Bruyne. It might still be early, but the countdown is already on as fans look forward to the December 9th showdown against Manchester United.
2. Manchester United
Last Week: 2
Premier League Championship Odds: +200
United might be the second-ranked team in terms of Premier League title odds but there is no doubt their outstanding start has fans talking about them as a favorite to win it all. Jose Mourinho’s side has outscored its opponents 8-0 through two matches. They have shown a similar aggression and sense of urgency in each of their first two matches. A home date with Leicester City could be their toughest test of the season so far. However, based on what we have seen early on there is no reason to expect United’s win streak to come to an end this week. After loading up in the offseason, it appears as though the Red Devils are a legitimate contender this season.
3. Chelsea
Last Week: 3
Premier League Championship Odds: +650
The defending Premier League champions were far from perfect against Tottenham over the weekend but they found a way to clinch the three points. Antonio Conte looked like a manager that had just won the Champions League after Marcos Alonso buried the game-winning goal in the 88th minute versus Spurs. Considering the 0-2 hole his club avoided, it’s not a surprise he was so excited. The Blues will need to be resilient in order to get their season on track following a shaky start. There is no doubt Chelsea has the talent to contend this season. If they can right the ship over the next couple of weeks, they could end up making their erratic start a distant memory really quickly.
4. Tottenham
Last Week: 4
Premier League Championship Odds: +1000
Spurs looked prime to secure at least a point against Chelsea before Alonso struck for the second time in the dying minutes of the second half. Tottenham has struggled against the Blues over the years so the fashion in which they let a point slip away this past weekend has to be even more disappointing. Spurs has flashed its quality through the first couple of weeks of the season. Only time will tell whether or not they have what it takes to contend with the top guns in the Premier League this season.
5. Liverpool
Last Week: –
Premier League Championship Odds: +1600
The rumors surrounding manager Jurgen Klopp off the pitch continued to swirl this past week. However, they were a lot easier to ignore with Liverpool picking up a win and a clean sheet. Klopp’s side makes its season debut at No. 5 on this list following a win and an Arsenal loss. However, this spot will be up for grabs again this week when those two sides clash at Anfield. A mid-week Champions League playoff match with Hoffenheim will create another obstacle for Liverpool leading up to its date with Gunners. It might still be early in the year, but it isn’t difficult to understand the importance of that Week 3 matchup.
