During the World Cup’s Group Stage, the field of 32 teams is divided into eight groups. These eight groups, labeled alphabetically A-H, conduct individual round-robin tournaments between the four teams. The top two teams from each group advance to the Knockout Stage.
How are World Cup Groups Determined
The groups are formed based on a number of variables including geographical criteria and random draws.
The four teams in each group are assigned a seeding. There are predetermined No. 1 seeds, which include the host country, but the remaining 2-4 seeds are placed into hierarchy by using the FIFA World Rankings and recent World Cup performances.
Each team in every group plays the other three teams once so that there is a total of six matches played in each group. Within the group tournament, teams are awarded three points for a win, one point for a draw and no points for a loss.
The top two point-getters from the group advance to the Knockout State of the World Cup. In the event of a tie, there are multiple tiebreakers in place to determine which teams move on to the next round.

FIFA World Cup Group C Team Previews and Players to Watch
FRANCE
The one-time champions from 1998, when they earned a World Cup title on the home soil, are coming to Russia as huge contenders to beat the 2018 FIFA World Cup, as the bookies favor them at +120 to reach the Semi-Finals. Four years ago in Brazil, the Blues lost to eventual winners Germany 1-0 in the Quarter-Finals, so their fans expect to see a much better performance this summer in Russia, as the pundits consider France as one of the toughest team in the world at the moment. The playmaker Paul Pogba who won the award for the best young player in 2014 will lead this France team, but alongside Pogba, there is plenty of talent among the Blues’ squad.
Their frontline is exceptional with Antoine Griezmann onwards, while the talented Kylian Mbappe could be a potential star of this tournament. France also possesses a great defensive line with some world-class players such as Raphael Varane and Samuel Umtiti, whilst their midfield could be classified as a hard-working one. The Blues prefer an attacking approach with a direct-passing style of play, so the bettors should pay attention to France, especially in the group stage, as the Blues are a far better team than the rest of the competition in the Group C.
Head Coach: Didier Deschamps
Players to Watch: Antoine Griezmann, Paul Pogba, Kylian Mbappe
Winner Odds: +650
Group C Odds: -350
Group Qualification Yes/No: -2000/+1100
PERU
The Incas have qualified for the FIFA World Cup final tournament for the first time since Spain 1982, and this will be their fifth involvement on the biggest stage. They managed to reach the Quarter-Finals in Mexico 1970 and Argentina 1978, having a wonderful generation of players, but this time in Russia, the bookmakers set the Incas as big +900 underdogs to replicate their best result. However, they still stand a solid chance to reach the second round in the competition with Denmark and Australia.
Peru will travel to Russia without their best player in the last decade, as the 34-year old striker Paolo Guerrero (86 caps, 32 goals) is banned by FIFA due to a usage of illegal substances, and this is surely a huge blow for the Incas. Guerrero is a top-class forward who’s presence on the field is crucial for Peruvians, so the manager Ricardo Gareca will have to find the way to play without him. Peru is a hardworking and well-balanced team who always try to put the pressure on their rivals, but the set pieces situations could be a huge problem against physically strong Denmark and Australia.
Head Coach: Ricardo Gareca
Players to Watch: Jefferson Farfan, Andre Carrillo, Christian Cueva
Winner Odds: +20000
Group C Odds: +450
Group Qualification Yes/No: +200/-275
DENMARK
The Danish Dynamite is ready to explode if you ask its’ manager Age Hareide who’s pretty sure his team has a quality to reach the second round. This will be Denmark’s fifth partaking at the FIFA World Cup, reaching the Quarter-Finals in France 1998, while they’ve missed the previous tournament in Brazil. Denmark has qualified for Russia 2018 after a brilliant 5-1 aggregate victory over the Republic of Ireland in the playoff, sending a clear message to their potential opponents at this tournament.
FIFA World Cup: Heroes Between the Sticks – From Ricardo Zamora to Keylor Navas
The leader and arguably the best player of this Denmark team is Christian Eriksen, as the 26-year old playmaker is certainly one of the most creative midfielders in the world at the moment, while his free-kicks will be a great danger for any rival in Russia. Denmark is a typical Scandinavian side, relying on a hard teamwork and direct style of play, trying to get something through counter-attacks. With Eriksen in a top form, the Danish Dynamite can score against anyone, while the bookies expect to see them at least in the Round of 16.
Head Coach: Age Hareide
Players to Watch: Christian Eriksen, Thomas Delaney, Simon Kjaer
Winner Odds: +10000
Group C Odds: +900
Group Qualification Yes/No: -150/+115
AUSTRALIA
Socceroos are another team from this group who’s had four appearances at the FIFA World Cup so far, qualifying for the second round only once in Germany 2006 when they lost 1-0 to Italy in the Round of 16 after a controversial penalty kick in the dying moments of the game. For years ago in Brazil, Australia has recorded all three losses in the group stage with a 3:9 goal difference, so their fans expect to see some kind of redemption this summer in Russia, although the bookies consider them among the biggest underdogs in the competition.
With a pretty limited talent among their squad, Socceroos rely on a disciplined team defense, always happy to sit back and wait for their chances, as they are quite dangerous through counter-attacking and particularly after set pieces. The bettors should keep eye on the 38-year old forward Tim Cahill, as he has a chance to become a fourth player in the history who managed to score in four different FIFA World Cup tournaments, so Cahill will have a huge motive to find the back of the net at 2018 World Cup in Russia.
Head Coach: Bert van Marwijk
Players to Watch: Tim Cahill, Mile Jedinak, Aaron Mooy
Winner Odds: +30000
Group C Odds: +1800
Group Qualification Yes/No: +350/-550
