A familiar face will return to the PGA Tour this week with Tiger Woods set to compete in the Farmers Insurance Open at the Torrey Pines Golf Course in La Jolla, California. It will mark Woods’ first start on the Tour since the Wyndham Championship back in August of 2015 and first official competition since the Hero World Challenge in December. Woods will undoubtedly command the spotlight regardless of how he performs this week but based on his resume over the past couple of years it is hard to consider him a relevant contender from a sports betting perspective this week.
Event
Event Details: Farmers Insurance Open
Category: PGA
Date: January 26-29
Location: Torrey Pines Golf Course, La Jolla, California
Three of the world’s top six players will be in action and while Woods will be talked about substantially heading in to the event it will be Dustin Johnson, Jason Day and Hideki Matsuyama that lead the way in terms of talent. Justin Thomas and Hudson Swafford have combined to capture the first three tournament victories of 2017 and it will be interesting to see whether another unlikely hero will step up and find a way to come out on top at this week’s event.
Past Five Winners
2016: Brandt Snedeker -6
2015: Jason Day -9
2014: Scott Stallings -9
2013: Tiger Woods -14
2012: Brandt Snedeker -16
What To Know About The Course
The Torrey Pines course is extremely long so Driving Distance should be extremely important once again at this year’s tournament. Driving Accuracy hasn’t been as important of a factor based on the recent statistics but Scrambling will be another stat to concentrate on this week when evaluating talent. Course form has been a strong indicator in the past but that doesn’t mean we are banking on Tiger to deliver another victory at this tournament.
The Field
Johnson and the 2015 Farmers Insurance Open winner Day will be the co-sports betting favorites to win this event at +900 odds with Matsuyama right behind them at +1200 odds. The defending champion Snedeker is listed at +2200 odds to repeat while Brooks Koepka, Jimmy Walker and Justin Rose round out the top sports betting favorites. Meanwhile, Tiger is listed at a generous +3300 odds to win outright but that has more to do with his name than what to expect of his performance this week.
A Good Matchup To Bet: Hideki Matsuyama over Brooks Koepka
Koepka quietly put together a solid fall season but he is listed at around the same odds as Matsuyama and we think the latter should have the edge in the head-to-head sports betting matchup. Matsuyama has cooled off a bit since his dominant stretch of wins and runner-up finishes in six straight starts bridging in to 2017 but he could turn it on again this week. Matsuyama has been excellent in terms of ball striking and putting so while he isn’t the longest hitter he should deliver a strong performance and edge out Koepka at Torrey Pines this week.
Top-Five Pick: Jason Day
It’s hard to overlook Day based on his recent form and the fact that he won this tournament just two years ago. Day looks completely refreshed after taking some time off and that could mean another dominant run from him in 2017. Day looked unstoppable a year ago when he was close to 100-percent so if he gets going again this week he should contend for the outright win and be a lock to finish in the top-five.
