Just a few weeks ago Florida looked like as good of a bet as anyone else in the country to grab an at-large spot, on the NCAA Tournament bubble. However, at this point, the Gators may be on the outside looking in thanks to their recent struggles.
Florida has now lost five of their last seven games, including the last three in a row. Last night, on Tuesday, the Gators let an opportunity against Kentucky to slip through their grasp. Instead of notching a key resume win, they got blown out on their home floor, missing yet another opportunity to steal their spot in the Big Dance. With only one road game left in the regular season, against Missouri this week, Florida is now in a position where they may need to make a deep run in the conference tournament if they want to give the selection committee a reason to pick them on Selection Sunday.
They have fallen, in the matter of less than a month, from being a top 25 RPI team to now being projected to finish right at or even just outside of the RPI top 50. While there are two teams ahead of them in the RPI that will be ineligible for the NCAA tournament, finishing that low can put your chances at risk, especially when you have only one signature win.
