Florida Loses Its Fourth Class of 2019 Recruit, Alabama Self-Reports Recruiting Violations

Dan Mullen had a great first season at the University of Florida. The Gators went 10-3 with wins over rivals Florida State and LSU and became the first head coach to finally beat Michigan with a 41-15 win over the Wolverines in the Peach Bowl. He signed a top 10 recruiting class too, but Mullen’s Class of 2019 has seen a lot of attrition in recent weeks.

Deyavie Hammond became the fourth player from Florida’s Class of 2019 to fail to make it to the fall semester. The NCAA determined that Hammond did not qualify due to academics, forcing Hammond to go the junior college route. Chris Steele, Diwun Black, and Jalon Jones have already left the program, and Hammond is the fourth four-star recruit of the bunch. To make matters worse, the Gators have already lost two commitments from next year’s class too.

The University of Alabama is in a little bit of trouble with the NCAA, but don’t expect anything major to come out of it. The Crimson Tide reported 16 minor violations (two for football), and most of them involved recruiting. Some of the recruiting bylaws breached are pretty ridiculous (Alabama is losing recruiting days due to five recruits receiving “personalized desserts”), but that’s the NCAA.

Finally, The Athletic has a great piece on the tragic death of former Rice Owl Blain Padgett. Padgett was found dead in his dorm room last year after taking the illegal substance carfentanil, and former teammate Stuart Mouchantaf has been charged in his death. It’s a powerful piece that shows the dangers of this new drug and gives some insight about Rice’s team dynamics.
