Gaethje vs Poirier Odds – The UFC on FOX 29 event is set to take place Saturday in Glendale, Arizona featuring Dustin Poirier vs Dustin Gaethje in the main event.
The UFC is eager to get last weekend behind them. The UFC 223 in Brooklyn was headlined by Khabib Nurmagomedov’s UFC lightweight title win over Al Iaquinta. Safe to say that was not the main event the UFC wanted as Nurmagomedov was originally slated to face Tony Ferguson, but in the end “The Eagle” has the title belt as expected.
The UFC was also going tomakea ConorMcGregor announcement at UFC 223 that went by the wayside when the Irishman started tossing hand trucks around backstage. Now the former champion McGregor is facing charges in NYC and the UFC ddn’t get to announce anything.
Justin vs Dustin this Saturday is the type of fight that could help people forget Conor McGregor. Poirier may have afast KO loss to McGregor on his resume but he has fought well since. As or Gaethje, he is looking to bounce back fro the first loss of his career at the hands of Eddie Alvarez.
That loss made Gaethje, the former World Series of Fighting champion, 1-1 in the UFC. Gaethje needs to win to avoid the appearance that his WSOF resume was thin. This is the UFC and going 1-2 in the door is not good for anyone’s career trajectory. Alvarez, the man who beat Gaethje, lost early in his UFC career but he avoided losing two in a row. By fighting hard fights, Alvarez fought for and won the UFC lightweight title shortly after. That is the “bounce back” Gaethje wants to mimmick. Beat Poirier and start setting his sights on Nurmagomedov.
Poirier also would like to work his way into a title hot and the fact for the UFC is that both guys are still fresh faces who are working to get a shot at the belt. Poirier has shown he can be a crowd pleaser, but his loss to Michael Johnson highlighted his quetionable chin. McGregor put him out, and that is understandable, but Johnson makes it a second time out cold for Poirier. If Gaethje sees Poirier’s chin exposed he is the type of guy who will take it. Knees, punches or whatever, Poirier is now a fighter who has to keep his chin protected. Some may find Gaethje’s underdog status in this one appealing at the books.
