Golf Fantasy: Recapping This Week’s Events

In case you’re wondering why you’re seeing the weekly golf recap a day later this week, it’s because the European Tour went through on Monday, so we had to wait for everything to wrap up.

Rory McIlroy found his form just in time to break through with a win at the Deutsche Bank Championship and generate some momentum in his favor heading towards the 2016 Ryder Cup. Meanwhile, the Omega European Masters ended with a thrilling playoff while the young stars took a backseat to a veteran European on the LPGA Tour. Here is a recap of the events from around the golf world this past weekend.

Deutsche Bank Championship

PGA Tour

We start our PGA Tour golf recap with Rory McIlroy. He put together an outstanding final round at TPC Boston to secure his first win since May at the Deutsche Bank Championship on Monday. The FedEx Cup event didn’t start until Friday and carried over through Monday in order to take advantage of the holiday long weekend. McIlroy was at his best in the final round when he shot a 65 to edge out Paul Casey by two strokes for the victory. It was a tremendous turnaround for McIlroy after he looked out of it early on when he opened the tournament at four-over. The Northern Irishman has deal with inconsistency throughout the summer but he talked about the confidence he gained from the win after the trophy presentation and how he feels as though he now has momentum on his side ahead of the 2016 Ryder Cup. Other notable finishes from the weekend include Jimmy Walker finishing third at 12-under followed by Adam Scott in fourth at 11-under. Patrick Reed, Fabian Gomez and James Hahn tied for fifth at 10-under. Next up is the BMW Championship this beginning on Thursday from the Crooked Stick Golf Club in Carmel, Indiana.

We start our EPGA Tour golf recap with Alex Noren of Sweden, who won the Omega European Masters in style when he sank a 25-foot putt to clinch a playoff victory over Scott Hend at the Crans-sur-Sierre in Switzerland. Noren and Hend tied at 17-under to force a playoff but it was the former that delivered in the clutch with a 25-foot birdie that helped him earn his second European Tour title of the season and the sixth of his career. Other notable finishes included Andrew Johnston three shots back in third, with Lee Westwood finishing five shots back after securing his 10th straight Ryder Cup appearance earlier in the week. Next up for the European Tour is the KLM Open, which begins on Thursday at the Kennemer Golf & Country Club in the Netherlands.

Manulife LPGA Classic

Carolina Masson made her move from a star-filled field when she broke away from the pack on the final day of the LPGA Manulife Classic to win her first-career LPGA Tour title. The 27-year-old from Germany bounced back from a double-bogey to open the round with nine straight birdies to finish 16-under for the tournament and clinch a one-stroke victory over Karine Icher and Minjee Lee. Masson joined Anna Nordqvist and Brittany Lang as the only players over 23 years old to win in the first 24 events of the season. She also joined Nordqvist as the only two European winners on the LPGA Tour so far this season. The young guns still impressed with world No. 1 Lydia Ko and rookie sensation Ariya Jutanugarn finishing tied for fifth at 14-under. The LPGA Tour is off this week and will continue the following Thursday with The Evian Championship from Haute-Savoie, France.
