Burroughs starts Podcast #53 by taking us through last week’s action on all tour’s. The PGA Tour made a rare visit to Wilmington, North Carolina at the Wells Fargo Championship where Brian Harman nailed a 30-foot putt on the last hole to deny Dustin Johnson his fourth consecutive win. It was Harman’s second career win on the PGA Tour.
Elsewhere, across the pond on the European Tour, Denmark captured the inaugural GolfSixes. The duo of Thorbjorn Olesen and Lucas Bjerregaard proved to be too much as they win the tournament.
The LPGA traveled to Mexico for the Lorena Ochoa Match Play where Sei Young Kim defeated Ariya Jutanugarn in the finals.
Burroughs makes his picks for the week as well as helping you set your fantasy team. Our host record stands at 56-32-7 for the year. Burroughs dishes on this week’s action on all the tours across the world.
This week the PGA Tour heads to TPC Sawgrass for THE PLAYERS Championship where Jason Day is the defending champion. The betting field is arguably the strongest of the year with 24 of the top 25 and 55 of the top 60 in the current world rankings.
Burroughs Predictions for THE PLAYERS Championship
FADE Dustin Johnson this week!
Dustin Johnson -145 vs. Sergio Garcia +115
It’s hard to overlook the world No. 1 Johnson and how he’s playing this year, BUT TPC Sawgrass and DJ don’t see eye to eye over the years. In fact, Johnson has yet to make a top 25 finish at THE PLAYERS. Garcia, on the other hand, loves playing this week’s venue, winning here in 2008 and is the all-time leading money winner in the history of the tournament. Take Garcia and the plus money.
Dustin Johnson -130 vs. Rory McIlroy – Even
As I mentioned above Johnson has not played well here in the past. In eight starts, his best finish is a T28. McIlroy recently got hitched and after fighting the Pete Dye design the first few years, has now embraced it and enjoys it. The Irishman has seven straight top 10’s in stroke-play events since September and three top 10’s and T12 in his last four PLAYERS with a stroke average of just over 70. Take the plus money and roll with Rory.
PICKS to WIN:
Sergio Garcia +1500 is the all-time leading money winner at THE PLAYERS and won here in 2008. He’s the best driver of the golf ball in the world and now with his head filled with positive vibes, look out! He’s rested since his epic win at the Masters and in my mind, the player to beat this week.
Justin Thomas +2750 has three wins this year but none since the Sony Open. The former Alabama product has embraced the challenge of TPC Sawgrass with two good finishes in his only two starts at THE PLAYERS. He tied for 25th in 2015 and followed it up with a T3 last year. He’s already fired a couple of 65’s on this track, so expect Thomas to be in the mix this week.
Burroughs wraps up No. 53 by sharing his story about when he finished T16 at THE PLAYERS back in 1990. He was paired with Hale Irwin and Tom Kite the last day and really gives listeners the feel of what it’s like to be in that position.
TV Coverage for THE PLAYERS: Thursday-Friday, 1-7 p.m. ET – Golf Channel. Saturday-Sunday, 2-7 p.m. – NBC.
