The news round up covered Lucas Browne and the question of PEDs, which seems to be a subject that is not going to go away in modern sports. Browne, the first Australian to win a piece of the heavyweight title is still working on a vigorous defense of the allegations, but it appears his situation is being forgotten by the greater boxing world.
With the recent Manny Pacquiao vs Timothy Bradley III fight doing about 450k PPV buys, the subject of pay-per-view also get discussed. The fact is that HBO has a major PPV in a few weeks as Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and Amir Khan square off on May 7th and it seems as if the powers that be are banking on that fight pulling in at least 1 million buys. But boxing appears to be down overall in terms of marketability in the post-Maywather era, and how many PPV buys that fight will do is anybody’s guess.
We also look back at last weekend’s big fights at the Barclays Center (Chris Algieri vs Errol Spence Jr) and Foxwoods (Gary Russell Jr vs Patrick Hyland) which aired on NBC and Showtime respectively.
Golovkin Takes Center Stage
But there is no doubt that the eyes of the boxing world will be on the Inglewood Forum and Gennady Golovkin on April 23rd.
Check out an in-depth review of the Gennady Golovkin vs Dominic Wade and Roman Gonzalez vs McWilliams Arroyo fights at The Boxing Channel.
For Wade, it remains to be seen how he will handle his business. There are very few people giving Wade a chance in this fight, and if he walks into the ring with nerves or “butterflies”, then you can expect the fight to last a very short time. As for Golovkin, he walks into the fight a massive favorite. He makes no secret about the fact that he wants big fights and more importantly, big money fights and this fight with Wade is not a big money fight. For the 34-0 Golovkin it is just business as usual.
It is just an observation, but the speed and quickness of the lower weight classes seems to lead to more competitive matches at times. Therefore McWilliams Arroyo has a sliver of hope of making it a match against the elite “Chocolatito” Gonzalez, but the inevitable dominance of Gonzalez is also expected to take over in this one.
This is a chance for the viewing public to see Gonzalez and Golovkin, two of the elite fighters in this era, together and on “free” HBO. The pair have been the feature of an HBO pay-per-view together at the end of last year, and they will likely be an HBO pay-per-view offering later this year.
