Golovkin vs Brook Set – In this fourteenth edition of the Talk ‘n’ Shoot Boxing Podcast, we get into some of the latest news from around the boxing world. This past week, Middleweight kingpin Gennady Golovkin announced that he would be heading to England to fight Kell Brook for his latest fight.
The fight made huge waves when it was announced, as Golovkin’s next opponent is always going to generate major interest. The choice of Brook is interesting for Golovkin in many ways, but it has also come with a good bit of backlash. The inevitable comparisons for Brook to fellow countryman Amir Khan are already out there. Khan went up two weight classes to fight “Canelo” Alvarez for his last bout.
Brook is a welterweight moving up two weight classes to middleweight for this fight. For Brook’s part, he is saying he is going to be more comfortable at 160 pounds because getting to 147 pounds is extreme for him. While many fighters changing weight classes will look for a warm up or tune up bout before jumping into deep waters, that is not the case with Brook. Golovkin is the number one middleweight in the world today.
For Golovkin, it opens up the British market and puts him firmly in the “A’ role in negotiations, as signing to fight Brook also puts an end to confusing negotiations with Chris Eubank Jr. Now Golovkin can go back to England later for a fight with Eubank Jr and down the line, with Billy Joe Saunders.

The TnS podcast also briefly touches on the upcoming Saul “Canelo” Alvarez vs Liam “Beefy” Smith scheduled for September 17th in Las Vegas. Alvarez is coming off his fight with Amir Khan where things went according to expectation and he scored a KO over a smaller man. In this fight, Alvarez is dropping back down to 154 lbs, super welterweight, and he is facing Smith, who holds the WBO belt in that weight class.
One of the open questions about this fight for Alvarez is his insistence that he is the top draw in boxing now. He will be counting on his own drawing power alone to sell this pay-per-view in te United States,
This weekend also sees FOX television airing heavyweight title action as Deontay Wilder puts his WBC belt on the line against Chris Arreola. Critics do not expect Arreola to be much of a challenge to Wilder, as his past history of weight and discipline problems have made Arreola damaged goods. Wilder is coming off the big letdown of seeing his fight against Alexander Povetkin scheduled for last May in Russia be cancelled. This match with Arreola materialized on short notice, and Wilder needs ring time.
The recent Anthony Joshua versus Dominic Breazeale match for the IBF heavyweight belt in England saw Joshua establish himself on the international heavyweight scene in a big way. A Wilder versus Joshua match will be very lucrative when it happens, but Wilder will need to get by Arreola first.
