Golovkin vs Matirosyan Odds For Cinco de Mayo

Golovkin vs Matirosyan Odds

Golovkin vs Matirosyan Odds – Saturday night, Cinco de Mayo, sees middleweight action att he StubHub as Gennady Golovkin faces Vanes Martirosyan.

Frankly, this is a weird fight to call. We were supposed to get Golovkin (37-0-1) facing Saul “Canelo” Alvarez in a rematch in what was potentially the biggest PPV of the year, But Alvarez positive drug test and subsequent suspension by the Nevada State Boxing Commission put Alvarez on the shelf.

In steps Martirosyan (36-3-1). The match gets moved from Vegas to the StubHub Center and gets taken off of HBO PPV and gets put on the regular channel. Presumably, Golovkin was told that his “Superfight” purse was not going to happen in May like expected.

Martirosyan is stepping into a no lose situation. He has not fought in two years and he is moving up to the middleweight division after a career at super welterweight. Even at 154 pounds, Martirosyan was not known as a huge puncher, rather he is a hard worker who is known to come forward. His style is very similar to Golovkin’s except for Triple GGG does just about everything better. Add to that his size advantage and the fact that Golovkin isa one-punch life-taker, and you get odds as spread out as they are for this one.

Will Golovkin be looking past this Saturday’s fight. Experience with Triple G says no. He has been very focused in remaining undefeated as a pro and that takes mental strength. He is going to need all of that to not be looking past Martirosyan.

But Triple G cannot help but carry baggage with him into the ring. Alvarez’ finishes serving his suspension in September, and that re-match is still the biggest fight available for Golovkin. His camp has already started the negotiations, as they have announced that they are moving on and that the Alvarez rematch has only a 10% chance of happening.

That is unlikely to be genuine, but Golovkin and his group are takin advantage of the negotiating chance here against Alvarez. When “Canelo”comes back it is going to be under boxing’s biggest spotlight and it behooves Golovkin to be  in the ring against him. What faces the 36 year old Golovkin otherwise is not appealing. Fighting WBO champion Billy Joe Saunders in England might pay well, but it is not likely to match HBO PPV.

Tune in this Saturday to see Golovkin get the job done and move on. Whether he gets Alvarez next or not remains to be seen. Golovkin is 36 years old and father time could show up as well. Alvarez and the rest of the boxing world will be watching to see how Golovkin performs this Saturday with all those factors weighing on his mind.
