HBO Boxing Odds Saturday Jan 28 – This Saturday, January 28th sees Oscar De la Hoya and his Golden Boy Promotions back in California, at the Fantasy Springs Casino with a big fight show that sees the main events air on HBO. The super featherweight division is front and center as two very competitive twelve round bouts in the 130 pound weight class sit atop the card.
The main event sees WBC champion Francisco Vargas (23-0-2) taking on Miguel Berchelt (30-1) in his second official title defense. Vargas has not had any easy fights in his world title resume. He won the belt in November of 2015 by stopping Japan’s Takashi Miura in the ninth round in a memorable “Fight of the Year” battle. He followed that in June of last year with a title defense against experienced veteran Orlando Salido and the results were a second year in a row where Vargas was in the “Fight of the Year.”
Berchelt has a lot of fight and he spent 2016 fighting for an interim world title with the WBO, but the level of opposition he has faced recently does not compare to that of Vargas. At 25 years old, Berchelt could be the fresher man heading into the ring this Saturday. Vargas is seven years older and his last two fights were certainly the type that take their toll on a fighter.
The second super featherweight feature sees former champion Takashi Miura (30-3-2) return to face battle tested Miguel Roman (56-11). The winner of this fight will likely face the winner of Berchelt and Vargas. Miura was stopped by Vargas, but Miura was ahead on the cards at that point and he will tell you that he should have been allowed to continue. ROman has a lot of fights but he has not lost a bout since October of 2012, going 18-0 in that time span.
Of course, the rematch between Vargas and Miura is the best bet in terms of a follow-up to this Saturday’s show. Miura is a fighter who fights with pride and the loss of his world title is something that he would like to avenge. Vargas however is in a firefight with Berchelt, and is no shoo-in for a win this weekend. Counting Roman out as well could be a mistake, as the 31 year old has logged 43 knock outs in his career.

Former welterweight world title challenger Sadam Ali (23-1) returns for his second fight since his loss to Jessie Vargas for the vacant WBO world title in March of 2016. Ali faces veteran Jorge Silva (22-12-2) in a match that sees Ali a massive favorite.
Also making a return to the ring after sitting out all of 2016 with an injury is middleweight Tureano Johnson (19-1). The hard hitting Johnson threw his name in the hat as a potential opponent for middleweight kingpin Gennady Golovkin back in late 2015, following his win on the under card of Triple G’s match with David Lemieux. Gutierrezz enters the fight 21-2-1 overall and he represents Johnson’s first competition in fifteen months.
