Heavyweight Boxing Odds for January 16

Heavyweight Boxing Odds

Heavyweight boxing odds are up at the sportsbooks for the big weekend of January 16th.  All eyes will be on the Barclays Center in New York as WBC World Heavyweight Champion Deontay Wilder (25-0) takes on Artur Szpilka (20-1) in his third title defense.  The co-feature bout sees the vacant IBF World Heavyweight title go home with the winner of Vyacheslav Glazkov and Charles Martin.  The fights are set to air on Showtime.

Wilder has 34 knock outs in his 35 wins, and he won the WBC belt last January with a unanimous decision over Bermane Stiverne.  Despite a successful 2015 that saw him go 3-0, Wilder still has some critics. Szpilka was not the first choice in opponents, as boxing politics reared its ugly head during negotiations. Wilder needs a convincing win to impress some of his naysayers.

Between Martin and Glazkov, one of the two will go home with the vacant IBF title that recently belonged to Tyson Fury and Wladimir Klitschko.  The fact that Martin and Glazkov were nearly unknown fighters a year ago today is a sign of how much the heavyweight division has changed recently. Now they are fighting for a world title on American television in New York City.  The doubters here are abundant as well.

The United Kingdom hosts a high-profile heavyweight affair, as former Cruiserweight and Heavyweight World Champion David Haye (26-2) returns after an absence of more than three years, to take on the challenge of Mark De Mori. Haye is looking to get back into the upper echelons of the division after being away from the sport, and he appears to have targeted a showdown with budding superstar Anthony Joshua, though his past rivalry with Tyson Fury is well documented as well.
