Houston Astros at Los Angeles Angels Betting Preview 05/14/18

The Houston Astros will head west to Angel Stadium of Anaheim to square off against their AL West foe Los Angeles Angels. ATTSN Southwest will broadcast the matchup and the first pitch will be at 10:07 p.m. ET.

Oddsmakers have listed Houston (-130) as the favorite over Los Angeles (+120). The total stands at 7.5 runs and bettors can wager on either the over or the under for -110. The game’s current runline odds sit at +115 for betting the Astros -1.5 runs and -135 for the Angels +1.5 runs.

The Angels are 24-16 SU and 21-18 ATS. They’ve gained 6.0 units for bettors taking the moneyline and 3.7 units against the spread (ATS). The Astros, on the other hand, are 26-16 SU and have gone 21-20 ATS. In total, the team’s lost 3.9 units for moneyline gamblers in this young season and 1.8 units ATS.

Los Angeles games have had an over/under record of 21-18 so far in 2018. Astros games have gone under 25 times, gone over 14 times and pushed on two occasions.

Right-hander Lance McCullers Jr. is getting the start for the visiting Astros. McCullers Jr. is 5-1 with a 3.72 ERA and 52 strikeouts. He has yet to face Los Angeles this year, but he did make three starts against the team in 2017, posting a 1-0 record with a 1.06 ERA and 16 strikeouts.

The Angels are sending lefty Andrew Heaney (1-2, 4.78 ERA) to the mound. Heaney has 29 punchouts and eight walks to his credit, as well as a 1.37 WHIP. Heaney did not record a start against the Astros in 2017.

Los Angeles’ pitchers have given up 4.2 runs per game overall in 2018 as a unit. The club’s starters have a 4.09 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and 9.2 strikeouts per nine innings. The bullpen has a 3.62 ERA, 1.38 WHIP and 9.2 K/9. In 16 games against AL West foes, Angels starters have an ERA of 3.66 and the bullpen’s ERA is 3.63.

Los Angeles’ hitters are putting up 5.0 runs per outing, including 6.4 per game against divisional foes and 4.8 per game over their last five. The team has hit .273/.379/.460 over its last five games and is 3-2 SU during that stretch.

The Angels’ hitters have been led by right fielder Mike Trout and shortstop Andrelton Simmons. Trout is slashing .315/.450/.650 with 12 home runs, 25 RBIs, 33 runs and eight stolen bases, and Simmons has produced a line of .338/.405/.500 with three homers, 23 RBIs and 25 runs scored.

Trout seemed to enjoy hitting right-handed pitching at home last season. Over 203 such plate appearances, he slashed .352/.468/.753 (his overall season line was .306/.442/.629).

In the other dugout, Houston’s pitchers have allowed 2.6 runs per game and its starting pitchers own a 2.24 ERA, 0.94 WHIP and 10.77 K/9. The bullpen has logged an ERA of 3.10, along with a WHIP of 0.94 and a K/9 of 9.89.

Astros hitters have slashed .256/.336/.414 on their way to 4.8 runs scored per game this year, including 5.2 runs per game against divisional foes and 4.0 per game over the team’s last five outings (4-1 SU).

Houston’s hitters have been led by shortstop Carlos Correa and right fielder George Springer. Correa is slashing .292/.374/.521 with seven home runs, 29 RBIs and 26 runs scored, while Springer (.296/.363/.506) has produced eight homers, 26 RBIs and 33 runs scored.

Maintaining a slash line of .407/.458/.630 across 59 such plate appearances, Correa enjoyed batting against left-handed pitchers on the road last year (compared to his total season slash line of .315/.391/.550).

The Astros have lost 3.1 units and are 7-7 ATS when facing a left-handed starting pitcher this season. The over has cashed in five of those games, compared to eight that’ve hit the under against lefties. On the other hand, the Angels have netted 5.6 units and are 17-13 ATS when facing a right-handed starting pitcher. The over has hit in 17 of those games, as opposed to 13 which went under the total.
