Houston Astros at Seattle Mariners Free Preview 04/16/18

The Houston Astros will make a road trip to Seattle to take on their division rival Mariners at Safeco Field. The first pitch is scheduled for 10:10 p.m. ET and ATTSN Southwest will broadcast the matchup.

Houston Astros vs. Seattle Mariners Odds

Vegas is listing Houston (-120) as the favorite over Seattle (+110). Gamblers can wager on the game’s total with odds sitting at +100 for over eight runs and -120 for under eight. Bettors can also wager on the game’s spread with the most recent runline odds sitting at +125 for the Astros -1.5 runs and -145 for the Mariners +1.5.

The Mariners are 8-5 SU and 9-3 ATS. The team’s gained 5.3 units for bettors taking the moneyline and 5.7 units against the spread (ATS). Seattle has covered the spread five times in its last seven games and the total has gone over in five of those seven. The Astros have gone 10-6 SU this year and are 7-8 ATS. Dallas Keuchel will get the start for the visiting Astros. The left-handed Keuchel is 0-2 with a 4.20 ERA and 13 strikeouts. He has yet to face Seattle this year, but he did make three starts against the team in 2017, posting a 3-0 record with a 1.31 ERA and 13 strikeouts.

The Mariners are handing the ball to lefty James Paxton (0-1, 5.74 ERA), who’s got 21 strikeouts and six walks, as well as a 1.40 WHIP. Paxton made four starts against the Astros in 2017, posting a 2-1 record with a 1.69 ERA and 20 strikeouts.

As a unit, Seattle’s pitchers have given up 4.8 runs per game overall this year. The team’s starters have an ERA of 5.51, a WHIP of 1.40 and a strikeouts-per-nine of 7.4. The bullpen has a 4.02 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and 10.0 K/9. In three divisional games, Mariners starters have an ERA of 5.17 and the bullpen’s ERA is 3.97.

Second baseman Robinson Cano and right fielder Mitch Haniger have led the Mariners’ offense this year. Cano is hitting .375/.537/.475 with 15 hits, four RBIs and 12 runs scored, and Haniger’s line is .289/.400/.578 with 13 hits, 15 RBIs and seven runs.

Cano didn’t do very well against lefty pitching at home last year. Over 103 such plate appearances, he slashed .198/.243/.292 (compared to his total season line of .280/.338/.453).

For the visitors, Houston’s pitching staff allowed 3.1 runs per game and its starters own a 2.66 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 12.45 K/9. The bullpen has logged an ERA of 2.88, along with a WHIP of 1.14 and a K/9 of 9.72.

The Astros offense has slashed .240/.327/.371 on its way to 4.2 runs scored per game this season, including 4.4 runs per game against divisional foes and 3.6 per game over the team’s last five outings (1-4 SU).

Houston’s hitters have been led by left fielder Josh Reddick and second baseman Jose Altuve. Reddick is slashing .308/.438/.564 with 12 hits, seven RBIs and eight runs scored, while Altuve (.344/.406/.377) is up to 21 hits, four RBIs and nine runs scored.

Compared to his total season slash line of .345/.409/.547, Altuve performed well on the road last year, putting up a slash line of .380/.447/.631 across 333 plate appearances.
