Each year, the American Gaming Association releases its prediction of how much money will be wagered on the Super Bowl.
Super Bowl 51 generated an estimated $4.7 billion in wagers, though the mass majority of that was done illegally through offshore websites and local bookies.
That estimate likely proved to be a tad on the high side. The AGA estimated that $200,000,000 would be wagered on the Super Bowl at Las Vegas sportsbooks. In actuality, there was only $138 million wagered.
Still, it was a record handle at Las Vegas sportsbooks for how much was bet on Super Bowl 51. The $138 million was up almost $6 million from the 2016 Super Bowl between the Broncos and Panthers, and that was an increase of $16.5 million from the year prior when the Patriots beat the Seahawks.
Back in 1991, when numbers were first widely available for Las Vegas sportsbooks, the handle in Sin City for the Super Bowl totaled just $40 million. That amount has more than tripled in the last two and a half decades, and it could top $150 million for the first time this year.
