HUDDERSFIELD TOWN
The Terriers are in hot and cold run lately as they won two out of the last four Premier League matches, and are now in the respectable 10th position with 15 points. Many expected them to fight relegation after getting promoted, but at the moment, Huddersfield is playing above expectations and is safe in the middle of the table. Huddersfield experienced rough time away from home recently, losing the previous two and conceding seven goals in the process, without scoring in return, including the last week’s 0:4 defeat to Bournemouth at Vitality Stadium. The Cherries took an early 2:0 lead after 30 minutes, but then Simon Francis received the second yellow card and just when everybody expected Huddersfield to get back into the encounter, Bournemouth scored two more goals and routinely beat the visitors. David Wagner’s side had even 69% of ball possession, and 20 attempts on goal, but only three of those were on target, which is utterly disappointing. Now they are welcoming the hottest team in Europe and anything, but a big win for the Citizens will be a huge surprise.
Huddersfield Town played 14 games so far in the 2017/18, recording six victories, three draws, and five losses, with a goal difference of 10:19, which is a bit over two goals per contest on average. The Terriers suffered only one defeat at home this season when Tottenham beat them 4:0 back in September and they won two in a row, including the 2:1 one over Manchester United. Pep Guardiola’s team is the obvious favorite here, but they must be aware of Huddersfield’s willingness and fighting spirit and City must not be underestimated the hosts under any circumstance, or that will come back to haunt them as it was the case with the Red Devils. City won the latest H2H duel in the replay of the FA Cup 1/8 finals last season, but the opening match ended in a stalemate draw, so Huddersfield already managed to stay undefeated against Manchester City in 2017, and they will try to repeat that performance on Sunday.
Aaron Mooy, Laurent Depoitre, and Steve Mounie are the team’s top scorers with a couple of goals to their respective names, and it’s evident that the lack of efficiency is Wagner’s most significant issue, as the Terriers just cannot score away from John Smith’s Stadium. That inefficiency on the road affects their general record, and ten goals in 14 matches is quite poor. Only six different players scored for the Terriers thus far, and the former Man City’s midfielder Mooy emerged as the leader of this team so that he could cause some problems to the visiting defense. David Wagner cannot count on the midfielder Philip Billing who is dealing with an ankle injury and will not be back until January, while Michael Hefele(Achilles tendon) and Jon GorencStankovic (cruciate ligament) are also out. Kasey Palmer could be back into contention for this tilt as he is recovering from a hamstring injury.
MANCHESTER CITY
The Citizens are in a phenomenal winning streak of 17 matches and no team in the European top five leagues accomplished that, so it is no wonder why they are the biggest favorites to win the Premier League and among the most serious contenders to win the Champions League for the first time in the club’s history. Manchester City won the fifth straight match in the UCL in the midweek as they beat Feyenoord 1:0 at Etihad, and although that victory came much harder than expected, 15 maximum points after five games must please Pep Guardiola and City fans as they secured the top spot in the group. Raheem Sterling was the scorer of the winning goal in the 88th minute after numerous attacks and chances for the hosts, but the Dutch champions must be given credit for ferocious defending and fighting throughout the entire clash.
When it comes to the Premier League, Manchester City is the clear leader with 34 points from 12 matches, eight more than their city rivals Manchester United, and it doesn’t look they will slow down anytime soon. Leicester City felt that on their skin as the Citizens beat them 2:0 at Kingdom Power Stadium last weekend, without allowing the Foxes a single shot on target and giving them miserable 25% of ball possession. Gabriel Jesus and Kevin De Bruyne scored at the end of the first half and beginning of the second to secure another three points to Pep Guardiola’s team, and it would be a miracle if Manchester fails to defeat the Terriers on Sunday, despite the fact that Huddersfield is playing well at home.
Manchester City played 19 games in this campaign, recording 18 victories and a draw, with a goal difference of 56:11, which is 3.52 goals per contest on average. The Citizens won all eight away matches so far this season, scoring ten goals in the previous four, so it will be interesting to see how they will cope with Huddersfield’s solid home defense. However, Guardiola will not make Jose Mourinho’s and Man United’s mistakes and will follow Mauricio Pochettino’s recipe as Spurs beat Huddersfield 4:0 at John Smith’s Stadium. They failed to do so in the last season when the hosts managed to stay unbeaten in the 1/8 finals of the FA Cup, and even held the Citizens to a 0:0 draw, so Guardiola already knows how well and organized Huddersfield can defend at home.
Raheem Sterling is the team’s leading scorer with 11 goals in 17 appearances and the England international is playing in the form of his life, while Sergio Aguero and Gabriel Jesus are following him on a goal-scoring chart with ten goals apiece. Leroy Sane has eight goals to his name at the moment, while he also added eight assists and is among the key contributors at Etihad. David Silva is the most creative individual with ten dishes, while the Belgian international Kevin De Bruyne has nine assists at the moment. Pep Guardiola will be without the centre-back John Stones who sustained a hamstring injury in a win over Leicester and will miss up to four weeks, while the left-back Benjamin Mendy is out for the season with the cruciate ligament injury. The captain Vincent Kompany and Nicolas Otamendi will start the match at the back, but ElaquimMangala is an option in case one of them suffers a setback prior or during the Sunday’s tilt.
Huddersfield Town vs. Manchester City – Match Prediction
The visitors are massive favorites to get three points here, and I think the Terriers are not good enough to avoid a heavy defeat, so I am backing the Citizens to win big here. Safe pick here is to with the over.
