If Cotto – Alvarez Fight Happens, What’s Next For Gennady Golovkin?

Gennady Golovkin, the No. 1 middleweight in the world and the holder of the IBO, WBC and WBA world titles is looking for a big money fight against the likes of WBC Middleweight champion Miguel Cotto or Mexican star Saul “Canelo” Alvarez.  But after Cotto’s June 6 stoppage of Australia’s Daniel Geale, it is more likely that Cotto and Alvarez will meet each other, leaving Golovkin as the odd man out and waiting for a fight.

Golovkin famously courted the Mexican audience back in October when he fought Marco Antonio Rubio.  That was part of the building process for a fight with “Canelo” or Julio Cesar Chavez Jr, who is no longer as appealing an option as he was last year.   After stopping Rubio in the second round, Golovkin announced in the ring that he would be fighting England’s Martin Murray next, a fight which he won in February.  Then in his last outing back in May he took out Willie Monroe Jr.

Golovkin’s other options, especially for a bigger fight tend to see him leaving the middleweight class to fight at Super middleweight, with the big challenge there being undefeated Andre Ward (27-0).  Ward is scheduled to fight Paul Smith on June 20.  In that fight, ward is a huge (-4400) favorite over Smith who is returning at (+2200). If Ward gets by that fight, you can expect him to be looking for Golovkin.

Golovkin has been sharp about fighting in big markets, and a fight in London against Carl Froch would be a big step for him.  Froch is nearing the end of his career and is lobbying for a big closing fight to his career.   Like with Ward, Froch likely forces Golovkin up in weight, but the fight has the potential to draw 80,000 fans to a stadium.

Britain has a strong scene in the middleweight division as well, and a matchup with WBO World Champion Andy Lee is possible for Golovkin next.  With up and coming fighters such as Billy Joe Saunders and Chris Eubank Jr. fighting there way up the rankings, both are Brits that stand as potential future opponents for Triple GGG.   It makes sense for Golovkin to make his next fight in Britain, checking off another huge market.  Against Froch it would be big news and the line could open anywhere, should he face Lee Golovkin would open a strong favorite.
