International Boxing Odds Jan 28th

International Boxing Odds Jan 28th – The last weekend of January sees Showtime Boxing step up with the big show scheduled for the MGM Grand, but several other high-level fights scheduled for Saturday are also getting attention at the sports books.

Oscar De La Hoya and his Golden Boy Promotions are in Indio, California for a nine-fight boxing card that will see the main events air on HBO in the United States. The card is headlined by WBC world super featherweight champion Francisco Vargas (23-0-2) as he makes a title defense against Miguel Berchelt (30-1). We last saw Vargas back in June when he fought rugged Orlando Salido to a draw in his first title defense, so this match marks his second title defense. Berchelt captured an interim version of the 130-pound WBO title in March of last year and he successfully defended that belt in July. Berchelt has a solid 27 KOs under his belt in his 30 wins, so he packs some power in his punches.

Oslo, Norway will once again host a welterweight title defense for female champion Cecilia Braekhus as she faces the challenge of Klara Svensson. Braekhus is 29-0 and she is widely considered the best female boxer on the planet. She is facing a fighter in Svensson, who is from neighboring Sweden, and has a 17-1 overall record. On October 1, 2016 Braekhus was the headline fight in Oslo during the first boxing card held in Norway in over 30 years, so Braekhus has become the face of boxing in her adopted home country. Braekhus will enter a big favorite in this fight and she is hoping that a win will leave her that much closer to worldwide recognition. Word is this fight may be moved to February 24th, check back.

Super Featherweight action sees former IBF world champion McJoe Arroyo  (17-1) taking on veteran Teiru Kinoshita (25-1-1) in his native Puerto Rico as Arroyo attempts to get back into the title picture. Arroyo lost the IBF belt to Jerwin Ancajas in his last fight back in September and this bout has been declared an IBF title eliminator, meaning the winner gets the next shot at Ancajas. The lone loss on Kinoshita’s record came in a failed world title bid back in July of 2014 and he has gone on a six-fight winning streak since then to earn this shot.
