IPFW Mastodons – IUPUI Jaguars Preview – 02.27.2016

The IUPUI Jaguars (12-18) welcome the IPFW Mastodons (23-7), the Summit League’s best team, to Indiana Farmers Coliseum. Action starts at 1:00 pm ET on Saturday, Feb. 27 and can be seen on EFC and ES3.

The Jaguars are hoping to rebound after their 85-82 loss to South Dakota on Thursday. Darell Combs was the game’s leading scorer, putting up 32 points. The Mastodons, meanwhile, are coming off an 87-75 win over Western Illinois on Thursday. Michael Calder stood out for IPFW, accumulating 19 points, seven assists, and five rebounds.

Over the last five games, Calder and John Konchar have been on a tear for the Mastodons. During that stretch, Calder has averaged 19.2 points, 3.8 rebounds, 3.8 assists, 1.0 steal, and 3.2 three-pointers. Not to be outdone, Konchar has put up 15.2 points, 9.2 rebounds, 2.2 assists, and 1.6 steals.

This is the second game of the year between these two teams, with the Jaguars winning the first matchup 84-82. Combs was a standout player in the game, producing 20 points, one rebound, three steals, and one three-pointer.

The Jaguars look to improve upon their records of 12-18 Straight Up (SU) and 16-13 Against The Spread (ATS). In their last 10 games, they are 7-3 ATS. The Jaguars have seen an uptick in scoring as of late, averaging 81.8 points during the last 10 games compared to their season average of 68.5 points per game.

Across the court, IPFW has a SU record of 23-7 and an ATS record of 20-5. The Mastodons rank 19th in the country in scoring, averaging 80.5 points per game. The Mastodons convert their three-pointers at a high percentage, ranking fifth in the nation at .418.

The Jaguars’ win over IPFW in their last game couldn’t give them the edge in the head-to-head record over their most recent meetings, where IPFW still leads 6-4 SU. Additionally, with a 6-4 record, IPFW has the advantage ATS. IPFW topped the Jaguars in three key areas (field goals, rebounds, and three-pointers) twice over the last five matchups. IUPUI has never had the edge in all three categories.
