Jacobs vs Sulecki Odds – HBO Boxing is at the Barclays Center this Saturday night with a middleweight main event featuring Daniel Jacobs vs Maciej Sulecki. Check your local listings for start times on HBO.
Sulecki may be undefeated at (26-0) but Jacobs (33-2) is the big story here. Jacobs went 1-1 in 2017, bouncing back in September with a win over Luis Arias after a March loss to Gennady Golovkin.
Jacobs should be a bigger name than he is. Highly skilled, with 29 knock outs in his 33 wins, Jacobs’ personal story includes overcoming a bout with cancer. Though he could not defeat Golovkin, he extended the Ukrainian headhunter the full twelve rounds and acquitted himself quite well. Jacobs is also a Brooklyn native, so he will have support from the hometown crowd, but he doesn’t seem to get the respect a top 5 middleweight should get.
As for Sulecki, the Polish fighter has remained undefeated over his pro career against moderate competition. He won a clash of undefeated fighters when he outpointed Hugo Centeno Jr for his best win. He has scored just 10 KOs, and that lack of power is going to hurt him against Jacobs. Jacobs is big and rangy and Sulecki is not going to be strong enough to hold Jacobs off. Like everyone in boxing nowadays, Jacobs could use a highlight reel performance as he spent 2017 without getting a knock out.
A win would keep Jacbs in the mix as one of the top contenders at 160 pounds. The other heavy hitters in the division include Golovkin, Saul Alvarez, Jermall Charlo and Billy Joe Saunders. With his skill package and now at 31 years old, a win should leave Jacobs in the hunt for a fight against any of the above mentioned titleholders at middleweight.
The card also features a meaningful heavyweight encounter as burgeoning contender Jerrel Miller (20-0-1) faces European veteran Johann Duhuapuas (37-4). Duhuapuas may still have designs of getting another world title shot. He lost his lone world title bid to Deontay Wilder in September of 2015 when he was stopped for the first time in his career. He also took a December of 2016 loss to Alexander Povetkin as a late replacement for Bermaine Stiverne. after the Povetkin fight he has strung together a three fight winning streak.
Miller has a lot riding on staying undefeated. He has been talked about as a potential opponent for Anthony Joshua when the Brit makes his American debut. Joshua is reported to be coming stateside to witness the fight first hand, so Miller will have plenty of reason to perform.
Duhuapuas will take the Joshua fight if he wins, that is for sure. Joshua is the fight that everyone wants. There can be no bigger reason for Miller to perform than that.
Also on thecard and getting attention at the books is Ireland’s sensational Katie Taylor as she looks to notch her ninth win as a pro against veteran Victoria Noeli Bustos (18-4). Bustos is from Argentina, where there is a big scene for women’s boxing so her experience may help her here, but it is unlikely she has seen anyone as skilled as Taylor.
