Jay Bruce Stars in Debut, Bochy Wins 1,000th and More

Jake Roth-USA TODAY Sports

Rarely have trades paid more immediate dividends than the Phillies’ one for Jay Bruce, who hit two home runs to help the Phillies beat the Padres on Tuesday night. Bruce’s presence became even more necessary because Philly learned Tuesday it has lost outfielder Andrew McCutchen for the season to a torn ACL. That all happened in San Diego — up the California coast in San Francisco, the Giants earned Bruce Bochy’s 1,000th victory with the club, joining John McGraw as the only managers in club history to reach that lofty mark. The MLB draft also continued Tuesday.

Bruce actually almost homered a third time. That would have been epic, but the Phillies are sure glad to have him regardless.

Andrew McCutchen is one of the good guys in baseball, so it’s rough to see this happen to him.

Bruce Bochy has won three World Series titles, of course, but he’s also been the model of consistency in San Francisco for 13 seasons.

Day 2 of the Draft has produced quite a few stars over the years. Could more be in this group?

Baseball can be dangerous for more than the players. Umpires Mike Everitt and Tom Haillon each had to leave their games Tuesday night with injuries.
