L.A. Fight Club Odds – The L.A. Fight Club series is back at the Belasco Theater in Los Angeles this coming Friday, April 15th with a six-fight card set to air on Estrella TV.
The main event sees a pair of veterans locking up at 154 lbs., as Jesus Soto Karass (28-10-3) returns after a layoff of more than two years to face the challenge of Japan’s Yoshihiro Kamegai (26-3-1).
Kamegai has been a bit of a road warrior in recent years, going 2-3-1 in fights outside of Japan. Just leaving Japan to box in the outside world is a major deal, as Japanese boxing can be very insulated. Nevertheless at Welterweight and Super Welterweight, Kamegai does not have a huge pool of competition in Japan to face, and he has maintained a perfect record over his 11-year career in fights at home. Kamegai is heavy handed, having scored 23 KOs in his 26 career wins.
Karass is coming back at 33 years old now and though he was always an action fighter, he had been through a lot of tough fights and the time off may have served to refreshen a tired body. In his heyday, Karass operated as a welterweight and here he is moving up a weight class. Adding weight after a long layoff is sometimes a sign that Karass’ body is no longer responding like it once did. Ring rust may play a factor for Karass, who we last saw losing back-to-back fights to Keith Thurman and Devon Alexander in December, 2013 and June, 2014 respectively. Should he look good this Friday, look for Karass to push for a big money fight in his next outing.
In the co-featured fight of the night, Ukrainian prospect Vyacheslav Shabranskyy looks to go to a perfect 16-0 as he faces workhorse Derrick Findley (23-18-1). Shabranskyy is 28-years-old and he is getting ready to make a move upwards. This fight with Findley is more about getting in practice and ring time to stay sharp than it is about testing himself. Shabranskyy’s name has come up as potentially the next opponent for Andre Ward before Ward’s end-of-year showdown with Sergey Kovalev. If a fight with Ward is in the works for Shabranskyy, no need to risk too much in this fight, and Findley is a low risk opponent.
