The big three continued their dominance atop the La Liga table this past weekend with Real Madrid, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid all registering wins to maintain their pace in the top three spots in the standings. While Barcelona narrowly held on for the 1-0 win over Granada, Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid combined for eight goals in their two wins so it’s no surprise that both teams are well represented on this list. Here is a look at the top individual La Liga fantasy performances from the Spanish Primera by position from this past weekend.
GK: Diego Lopez, Espanyol
Espanyol got back in the win column with its first victory in five games thanks in large part to the performance of their goalkeeper Lopez, who stopped all five shots he faced in a 1-0 victory over Real Betis. Espanyol needed their goalkeeper to step up time and again against a team they were chasing in the standings and the three points they earned in the win helped them move in to a tie with Real Betis for 12th place in the La Liga standings at 11 points each.
Honorable Mention: Geronimo Rulli, Real Sociedad; Marc-Andre ter Stegen, Barcelona
D: Diego Reyes, Espanyol
In a game where both goalkeepers performed at a high level, it was the defender Reyes that made the difference with the lone goal in the 1-0 win. Espanyol finished the game with four shots in total but it was Reyes that delivered the lone marker and game-winning goal on his only shot. The winning goal combined with a clean sheet bonus was more than enough for Reyes to earn top La Liga fantasy honors at his position this week.
Honorable Mention: Marcelo, Real Madrid; Ivan Ramis, Eibar
M: Yannick Carrasco, Atletico Madrid
Carrasco continued his dominance from the Atletico Madrid midfield with another multi-point performance in a 4-2 win over Malaga. Carrasco opened the scoring for Atletico Madrid in the seventh minute and then added an insurance marker in the 86th as his side cruised to another three points. Carrasco has been outstanding early on this season and he is a big reason why Atletico Madrid currently sits third in the La Liga standings.
M: Iago Aspas, Celta Vigo
Aspas likely won’t take solace in the fact that his two goals weren’t enough to help Celta Vigo clinch three points against Las Palmas but it did earn him a spot on this list as the second-best La Liga fantasy midfielder for this past weekend. Aspas added to Celta Vigo’s 1-0 win with a pair of goals in the 14th and 21st minutes but Las Palmas went on to score three unanswered goals in the second half to tie the game. Aspas might not have helped his team win but he did finish with two goals and two shots to register the second-best La Liga fantasy score at his position this past weekend.
Honorable Mention: Jonathan Viera, Las Palmas; Rafinha, Barcelona; Pedro Leon, Eibar
F: Cristiano Ronaldo, Real Madrid
Ronaldo delivered a vintage performance in Real Madrid’s 4-1 win over Alaves, missing a penalty kick but still finishing with the hat trick. The star striker finished with eight shots in total with four of his attempts hitting the mark, including the three goals. Real Madrid will need its stars at their absolute best as they look to maintain their edge atop La Liga throughout this season and no one player will be more important than Ronaldo. Real Madrid has been excellent in terms of La Liga fantasy as their offense has delivered 28 goals in 10 games. That’s the second-most in La Liga.
F: Kevin Garneiro, Atletico Madrid
Garneiro also delivered a solid performance for Atletico Madrid, scoring two goals on three shots with Carrasco’s two goals bookending his tallies. Fellow striker Antoine Griezmann finished the match with two assists but the fact that Garneiro scored two goals including the game-winning marker was enough to give him the edge between the Atletico Madrid teammates. Atletico Madrid is currently in third place in the standings with 21 points in 10 games. They are one point behind Barcelona and three points back of Real Madrid for first place.
