There was certainly plenty of goal scoring around La Liga over the weekend with Barcelona exploding for six goals while Real Madrid registered three. Meanwhile, Sevilla FC needed only a single goal to earn three points thanks to a brilliant performance from their goalkeeper. Here is a look at the top individual La Liga fantasy performances by position from this past week in the Spanish Primera.
GK: Sergio Rico, Sevilla FC
There was no doubt about who earned top fantasy goalkeeper honors this past week as Rico turned aside all seven shots he faced in a 1-0 win over Las Palmas. Rico faced what was easily the heaviest workload out of all of the goalkeepers that registered clean sheet wins over the weekend so it was an easy choice for top fantasy goalkeeper honors. Barcelona’s Marc-Andre ter Stegen and Sporting Gijob’s Ivan Cuellar each earned honorable mentions for strong performances as well.
Honorable Mention: Marc-Andre ter Stegen, Barcelona; Ivan Cuellar, Sporting Gijon
D: Aleix Vidal, Barcelona
Vidal was excellent at both ends of the pitch in Barcelona’s 6-0 win over Alaves as he registered an assist and received a bonus for the clean sheet victory. Luis Suarez, Lionel Messi and Neymar delivered absolutely dominant performances up front for the Spanish giants but Vidal’s performance certainly wasn’t overlooked.
Honorable Mention: Isco, Real Madrid; Gustavo Cabral, Celta Vigo;
M: Yannick Carrasco, Atletico Madrid
Atletico Madrid kept pace with the big boys thanks to a strong performance from its attacking players in a 3-2 win over Celta Vigo. Carrasco was their biggest star as he scored a goal and added an assist with six shots in total to earn top fantasy midfield honors for this past week.
Atletico Madrid is now in fourth place in the La Liga standings with 42 points in 22 games.
M: Aritz Aduriz, Athletic Bilbao
Aduriz made his mark in Athletic Bilbao’s 2-1 win over Deportivo La Coruna as he scored a goal and finished with four shots on target. Tied at 1-1 in the 89th minute, Aduriz put Athletic Bilbao ahead with the game-winning goal as they climbed back from an early deficit to win the game.
Bilbao isn’t often on our list of La Liga fantasy but they put forth a decent performance this week. They scored a pair of goals to up their total to 28 on the season (in 22 games). They are now eighth in the La Liga standings but their goals scored is the fewest of any team in the Top 11.
Honorable Mention: Ivan Rakitic, Barcelona; Burgui, Sporting Gijon
F: Luis Suarez, Barcelona
Messi and Neymar both found the back of the net for Barcelona but it was Suarez that delivered the most dominant and complete performance from a fantasy perspective. Suarez scored two goals and added two assists with five shots in total to finish the weekend with the best fantasy performance regardless of position. Barcelona’s attacking trio has shown flashes of its absolute dominance throughout the season and this was definitely one more example of it with Suarez shining brightest.
Barcelona is the team to look at in terms of La Liga fantasy each week. They’ve now managed 61 goals so far this season, which is the most in the Spanish Primera. Them and Real Madrid are a cut above when it comes to scoring (and pretty much everything else).
F: Cristiano Ronaldo, Real Madrid
Ronaldo did his part for Real Madrid in their 3-1 win over Osasuna as he scored a goal and finished with four shots in total. On a weekend where there was plenty of scoring across Spain’s top division it’s clear that Ronaldo earned his share of the spotlight with the second-best La Liga fantasy score among strikers.
Real Madrid has been the second-best scoring team in La Liga so far this season. They have managed to net 54 goals, which is the second-most in the Spanish Primera. To illustrate just how dominant they have been, only two other teams in the entire league have scored more than 39 goals.
Honorable Mention: Lionel Messi, Barcelona; Neymar, Barcelona
