Last Day of the NHL Regular Season, Playoff Seeding and More

Adam Hunger-USA TODAY Sports

Today marks the end of the NHL regular season. All of the playoff teams have been determined after the Columbus Blue Jackets put an “x” next to their name last night, but not all of the First Round series have been set just yet. Tonight’s games will sort that out.

Every team is in action on the last day of the regular season, so there will be plenty of scoreboard watching in order to determine which teams will meet in the first round of the NHL playoffs next week.

Toronto already knows that it will be playing Boston in the first round of the playoffs, so the Maple Leafs are sitting a lot of their defenders to have them healthy for the postseason.

Nashville, Winnipeg and St. Louis are in a three-way dogfight to determine the Central Division winner. The Predators are the favorites to grab the spot after Winnipeg stumbled down the stretch, but the Jets and Blues are waiting in the wings.

The two best women’s hockey teams in the world will square off today when the United States takes on Canada. The US has dominated the series lately, but the Canadians have always been a game opponent.

In more somber news, today marks the one-year anniversary of the Humboldt crash. The story and aftermath has captivated Canada over the past year, and the NHL marked the tragic event today too.
