The LeBron James free-agency mania has reached a fever pitch. Will he return to the Cavaliers? Join a contender like the Rockets or Celtics? Look to build an empire in Los Angeles? Though speculation about his next move is all over the internet, no one knows what it will be.
And that’s because LeBron himself doesn’t know, per a new report. According to Joe Vardon of Cleveland.com, the Cavs are heading into the draft without any idea of whether LeBron will return.
“According to sources, the Cavs’ front office and James’ camp have been in contact over the phone and in person, though there has been no meeting with James present, nor has there been any real dialogue as far as James’ future is concerned,” Vardon writes. “Because the superstar himself doesn’t know. The Cavs have been signaling (strongly, in some cases) that they’re looking to upgrade their team from the group that was swept out of the Finals this month, whether James stays or goes.”
LeBron’s decision almost certainly depends on how the Cavs are able to adjust their roster, and their most valuable trade chip may be the No. 8 pick. A pick is naturally worth less after the team has used it — no matter which player the team selects — so the Cavs could very well make a move on or before draft night. Don’t be surprised if Kevin Love ends up in a new uniform.
As we noted Monday, the Cavs appear to be jockeying for Kawhi Leonard. Koby Altman and the Cavs’ front office seem to be looking at any and every move that could bring LeBron back to The Land.
LeBron’s Odds
The Lakers are the favorite to land LeBron. L.A. has a number of promising young pieces (most notably Lonzo Ball, Kyle Kuzma, and Brandon Ingram). Furthermore, LeBron has a longstanding close relationship with Magic Johnson. Lastly, his entertainment company — SpringHill Entertainment — is based in Hollywood.
This cocktail of factors has Vegas convinced LeBron is headed to the purple and gold, but other teams remain in strong contention. Check out Tuesday’s odds for LeBron’s decision below, via BetDSI Sportsbook.
