Lightning Gear Up for Game 2, Flames Blank the Avalanche and More

Kim Klement-USA TODAY Sports

The Tampa Bay Lightning are looking to shake off a stunning loss in Game 1 of their first round series with the Columbus Blue Jackets tonight in Game 2. Tampa Bay blew a three-goal lead on Tuesday and the Lightning know another loss would really put them behind the eight ball. There are four other games on Friday, so let’s take a look at some of those and more below.

The Islanders are looking to go 2-0 up on the Penguins tonight and put the winners of two of the last three Stanley Cups in serious jeopardy. Jordan Eberle scored his first playoff goal in Game 1, and he is out for more in Game 2 of the series.

Mitch Marner helped the Toronto Maple Leafs steal home ice advantage away from the Boston Bruins with two goals in a 4-1 win last night. The Maple Leafs were knocked out in seven games by the Bruins last year, but Marner, Auston Matthews, and John Tavares are out to lead Toronto to a playoff series win for the first time since the NHL lockout 15 years ago.

Calgary had the most impressive performance of any team in Game 1. The Flames shut out the Avalanche 4-0 last night as Mike Smith looked great in net. Smith stopped all 26 shots he faced, and if he gets hot, the Flames could be the first Canadian team to hoist the Stanley Cup since the Montreal Canadiens in 1993.

Team Canada had little trouble beating Germany on Thursday to advance to the IIHF Women’s World Championship Semifinals. They will face hosts Finland on Saturday, and a win would likely pit them against Team USA in the final on Sunday.
