The London Series between the Yankees and Red Sox was a smashing success first of all for the Yanks, who scored 29 runs and swept the series. It also worked out very well for baseball in general. Star fans like Stephen King and ex-players like Phil Hughes tuned in and were engaged, as were thousands of Londoners who hadn’t experienced much baseball before. Next year, it’ll be the Cardinals and Cubs’ turn. Back state-side, the All-Star rosters were completed, with the usual deserving nods, excited players and, yes, a few snubs. And the Mets capped a big day of baseball with a comeback against the Braves.

No, the Red Sox didn’t hold up their end of the bargain and win a game. But an engaged audience and nearly 120,000 fans in person makes the weekend a success for everyone involved.

One of the fun parts about the All-Star game is seeing the players come together to root for one another and how excited the first-time selections get. The Midsummer Classic is alive and well.

The final game of the weekend was one of the best, a back-and-forth affair that the Mets won with a five-run eighth inning.
