It’s about to get emotional in here. It’s like that for fans and followers of the Los Angeles and formerly St. Louis Rams. There’s a lot to deal with this offseason, specifically a move from the town the team won its only Super Bowl in and a return to the town it should have never left in the first place. There’s a lot of hard and weird feelings, but all of us can agree on one thing; Jeff Fisher is a terrible NFL head coach.
Fisher is no mystery. He’s entering the final year of his contract with the Rams and if he can’t produce a winning season it will be his final year under contract with any NFL team. He’ll never get another shot. So if you think he’s going to waste his first round pick on a quarterback that will only see the field for the guy Stan Kroenke hires to replace him, you’re nuts. So here is what the Rams should do in my Perfect Mock Draft.
To see every team’s perfect draft, click here.
Round 1, Pick 15 – Laquon Treadwell, WR, Ole Miss
2015: 82 catches, 1,153 yards, 11 touchdowns, 6-foot-2, 221 pounds
I’ve had Treadwell penciled in for the Rams since my first mock draft and that hasn’t changed. What has been different is Treadwell’s stock and how it’s fallen some since the offseason began and it was clear his best 40-time was a 4.63. It’s dropped him out of the Top 10 for sure and I think right into the waiting hands of the Rams who need him desperately. Los Angeles already has fast guys (ridiculously fast guys actually) and they have big guys, but what they don’t have is a guy that can get open on third down and in the red zone and catch the effing ball. That is exactly who Treadwell is. No one in this draft at wide receiver or corner can match Treadwell’s catching ability. If he’s there are 15, he’ll be wearing a Rams jersey in September.
Round 2, Pick 43 – Ryan Kelly, Center, Alabama
2015: Rimington Award and Jacobs Blocking Trophy, 6-foot-4, 311 pounds
The Rams have a decent center already in Tim Barnes, but he’d be better served as a back up. Kelly has first round ability and a first-round grade, but he plays a second-round position. There’ll be plenty of time to make money in the future for Kelly who could be a day-one starter.
Round 2, Pick 45 – Hunter Henry, TE, Arkansas
2015: 51 catches, 739 yards, three touchdowns, 6-foot-5, 250 pounds
The Rams cut ties with tight end Jared Cook, who’s been the team’s leading receiver over the last few seasons. Henry immediately teams up with Lance Kendricks as a two-headed tight end threat with more reliable hands than Cook ever had.
Round 3, Pick 76 – Dak Prescott, QB, Mississippi State
2015: 66.2 completion percentage, 3,793 yards, 29 touchdowns, five interceptions, 160 rushes, 588 yards, 10 touchdowns, 6-foot-2, 226 pounds
While I don’t think the Rams will take a QB in the first round, they should take one at this spot and no QB would fit better what Fisher likes to do than Prescott. Prescott is the top QB on my board and just the kind of guy Fisher could use as a parachute at the end of the season, win a few games, and then act like he’s building something for the future so Kroenke offers him a contract extension.
Round 4, Pick 110 – Glenn Gronkowski, FB, Kansas State
2015: 11 carries, 45 yards, 4.1 yards per carry, one touchdown, five catches, 76 yards, one touchdown, 6-foot-2, 239 pounds
Baby Gronk is the younger brother of the big Gronk himself, Rob Gronkowski of the New England Patriots. Not too many teams use a fullback anymore, but the Rams do and Gronkowski’s pedigree and measurables alone make him a can’t-miss pick. The Rams could immediately use him in H-Back packages and no one would do better opening up holes for Todd Gurley.
Round 6, Pick 190 – Kevin Peterson, CB, Oklahoma State
2015: 42 tackles, 4.5 for a loss, one interception, six passes defended, one fumble recovery, 5-foot-10, 181 pounds
Peterson has faced off against some of the best prospects coming out of college football at wide receiver over the pas few years and more than held his own. With the loss of Janoris Jenkins in free agency the Rams aren’t hurting at the position as bad as people think with E.J. Gaines on his way back from a preseason injury last year. Peterson adds some much-needed depth to a position the Rams will be filling up with undrafted free agents too.
