Lucha Underground S2E1 Recap: Newer, Darker Temple

Photo from El Rey Network

This episode of Lucha Underground is the first episode of the second season, so before we go into this show, let’s recap what happened at Ultima Lucha.

In non-title bouts, Johnny Mundo defeated Alberto El Patron (thanks to the help of Melina), Blue Demon Jr. defeated Texano (thanks to the help of Chavo Guerrero), Drago defeated Hernandez (thanks to the help of the Believers),  and Pentagon Jr. defeated his master, Vampiro. In title matches, we saw a new Gift of the Gods Champion in Fenix, the Disciples of Death won the Trios Championship, and Mil Muertes walked out of Ultima Lucha as the new Lucha Underground Champion.

This recap is part of a series that is recapping the entirety of Lucha Underground. If you would like to catch up on previous recaps, click here for the recap of the last episode. Currently, Lucha Underground airs Wednesdays on El Rey Network, and is now available on iTunes.

Opening Segment
The show kicks off with Vampiro (Ian Hodgkinson) at some sort of psychological clinic. The last time we saw Vampiro, he was in a brutal Cero Miedo match against his apprentice, Pentagon Jr.. His psychiatrist says that he should avoid the people and places that trigger violent behaviors, to which he agrees, and is granted his release. He is picked up by fellow commentator Matt Striker, who says that they are invited back to the Temple, but that it’s a much darker place than before.

We switch to what used to be Dario Cueto’s office, where Catrina seems to have taken over. She is greeted by Fenix, who has the Gift of the Gods Championship, and is ready to challenge Mil Muertes. Catrina makes him wait a week, and he has to successfully defend his Gift of the Gods Championship against King Cuerno tonight to be able to cash it in next week.

Fenix (c) vs. King Cuerno – Gift of the Gods Championship
Fenix and King Cuerno competed at Ultima Lucha in a seven-way match for the Gift of the Gods Championship, which Fenix ended up winning. With the Gift of the Gods Championship, the holder is able to cash in the title for a guaranteed opportunity at the Lucha Underground Championship, just as Fenix did earlier tonight.

King Cuerno rolls out of the way of a springboard 450 splash, and hits a modified tombstone piledriver to pick up the win. Winner, and NEW Gift of the Gods Champion: King Cuerno

Backstage Segment
Catrina approaches the former Trios Champions, Son of Havoc, Ivelisse, and Angélico, and tells them that they have a triple threat match. Whoever wins the match between the three of them will have a Lucha Underground Championship opportunity against Mil Muertes.

Son of Havoc vs. Ivelisse vs. Angélico – #1 Contender’s Match (Lucha Underground Championship)
All three of these competitors overcame the odds several time to become a well-working team, and to become the first-ever Lucha Underground Trios Champions. This is their first match since losing the Trios Championship to the Disciples of Death at Ultima Lucha, and Catrina is trying to pull them apart.

Ivelisse prevents Son of Havoc from hitting the Shooting Star Press by knocking him onto the ropes, and rolls up Angélico to become the #1 Contender for the Lucha Underground Championship. Winner, and NEW #1 Contender: Ivelisse

Mil Muertes (c) (w/Catrina) vs. Ivelisse – Lucha Underground Championship
Before the match starts, the Disciples of Death attack and carry Angélico and Son of Havoc to the back. Along with the size disadvantage, Ivelisse doesn’t benefit from the fact that she just had a match against two other competitors. Earlier in the night, Ivelisse said that if she wins the Lucha Underground Championship, she is coming for Catrina.

After an emphatic powerslam to Ivelisse, Mil Muertes hits the Flatliner to retain his title. Winner, and STILL Lucha Underground Champion: Mil Muertes

After the match, Mil Muertes is about to hit Ivelisse with a second Flatliner, when Prince Puma comes out of nowhere to make the save. While Muertes is distracted by Prince Puma, Pentagon Jr. hits Mil Muertes with the backstabber, then proceeds to break Mil Muertes’s arm.
