Lucha Underground S1E9 Recap: Aztec Warfare, First LU Champion

Photo from El Rey Network

The last episode of Lucha Underground featured two 10-man matches, with the winners being Mil Muertes and Fenix. In the main event, they faced off to determine whether they would enter first or last in the Aztec Warfare match, and Mil Muertes won, meaning he will enter last and be the freshest competitor in the match. Fenix lost, however, and will enter first, having to last longer than 19 other wrestlers to win.

Tonight will feature the Aztec Warfare match, which will features 20 wrestlers, and Dario Cueto describes it as the “most brutal match ever.” The winner of this match will be crowned the first ever Lucha Underground Champion.

This recap is part of a series that is recapping the entirety of Lucha Underground. If you would like to catch up on previous recaps, click here for the recap of the last episode. Currently, Lucha Underground airs Wednesdays on El Rey Network, and is now available on iTunes.

Opening Segment
Dario Cueto is out here to promote the Aztec Warfare match. The rules are simple: Every 90 seconds, a new competitor enters the match, and you can only be eliminated by pinfall or submission. There are no disqualifications, and anything goes.

Aztec Warfare – Lucha Underground Championship
The first entrant in the match is Fenix, who lost the main event of the last episode of Lucha Underground. The second competitor is none other than Johnny Mundo, to get this match off to an exciting start. This seems like this is the only match of the night, so I will detail entrances and eliminations.

At #3 is Mr. Cisco (apparently that’s his name now), and without the rest of his allies with him, it’ll be interesting to see how he fares on his own. Not so well, it seems, as Johnny Mundo hits the End of the World to eliminated Mr. Cisco. Eliminated: Mr. Cisco

During commercial, King Cuerno entered at #4 and has stayed in the match since. Immediately after the commercial break, Son of Havoc enters at #5. At #6 is Pimpinela Escarlata, perhaps the most flamboyant wrestler in Lucha Underground.

With everybody staying in the match so far other than Mr. Cisco, Prince Puma is #7. After Puma is an unexpected #8, Ivelisse. Ivelisse hits a kick similar to the Trouble in Paradise that Kofi Kingston uses, and sets up Son of Havoc to hit the Shooting Star Press to eliminate Pimpinela Escarlata. Eliminated: Pimpinela Escarlata

#9 is Drago, who has been very impressive over the last several episodes.

King Cuerno hits the Thrill of the Hunt on Ivelisse for the elimination. Eliminated: Ivelisse

Almost immediately after Bael enters at #10, Prince Puma hits Son of Havoc with a devastating kick for the elimination. Eliminated: Son of Havoc

At #11 is Cortez Castro, who will help give Bael the numbers game advantage. #12 ends up being the rarely seen Ricky Mandel, who hopes to make a name for himself in this match.

After hitting a Jackhammer-like suplex and a Standing Shooting Star Press, Prince Puma eliminates Bael. Immediately after, Johnny Mundo eliminates Cortez Castro after a shining wizard. Eliminated: Bael & Cortez Castro

#13 is a very angry Big Ryck, who witness his entire crew get eliminated before he even got in the match. After entering the ring, he hits a slam almost like the Rock Bottom to eliminate Ricky Mandel, then he tosses Drago onto the shoulders of King Cuerno. Cuerno hits the Thrill of the Hunt to eliminate Drago, and Johnny Mundo eliminates Cuerno with a crucifix pin. Eliminated: Drago, King Cuerno, & Ricky Mandel

#14 is Pentagon Jr., who cleans house, but doesn’t end up eliminating anybody because Big Ryck interrupts his pin on Fenix for some reason. Super Fly, who has been showing what he’s capable of over the last few weeks, enters at #15. There are only five spots left, including Mil Muertes at #20.

With a chair in hand, Chavo Guerrero enters at #16. Chavo used a chair to take out half of the roster several weeks ago, and since there are no disqualifications, he was able to use it to take out Super Fly and Pentagon Jr.. Eliminated: Super Fly & Pentagon Jr.

#17 is the incredibly popular Mascarita Sagrada, who is about half the size of everybody else in the match. After Sagrada is another female entrant in this match, Sexy Star at #18.

After a vicious clothesline, Big Ryck eliminates Mascarita Sagrada. Eliminated: Mascarita Sagrada

#19 is El Mariachi Loco, who we haven’t seen a lot of, but in his short displays he has done a great deal. Finally at #20, is Mil Muertes. The fact that he is undefeated and the freshest luchador in the match, he has the biggest advantage.

Immediately after entering, Mil Muertes eliminate El Mariachi Loco with the Flatliner. Eliminated: El Mariachi Loco

Big Ryck gets eliminated after a 450 splash from Fenix, the End of the World from Johnny Mundo, and a standing Shooting Star Press from Prince Puma. Afterwords, Guerrero hits Fenix with a chair for the elimination. Eliminated: Big Ryck & Fenix

Chavo taunts Sexy Star after hitting her with a chair, and Blue Demon Jr. returns to make the save, leading the an elimination from Sexy Star. Eliminated: Chavo Guerrero

It’s down to the final four: Mil Muertes, Prince Puma, Johnny Mundo, and Sexy Star.

A huge spear from Mil Muertes eliminates Sexy Star. Eliminated: Sexy Star

Both Johnny Mundo and Prince Puma hit a springboard 450 splash on Mil Muertes for the elimination, and Mil Muertes’s first defeat. Eliminated: Mil Muertes

After hitting the 630 Splash, Prince Puma eliminates Johnny Mundo for the win. Winner, and FIRST EVER Lucha Underground Champion: Prince Puma

After the match, Johnny Mundo and Prince Puma shake hands in a sign of respect to end this episode of Lucha Underground.
