Lucha Underground S2E2 Recap: PJ Black Debuts

Photo from El Rey Network

The last episode of Lucha Underground was the Season 2 premiere, and it was a huge night to start off the new season. Catrina is in charge of the Temple, with the Lucha Underground Champion (Mil Muertes) and the Trios Champions (The Disciples of Death) obeying her every command.

To start off Season 2, there were two big championship matches, as well as a #1 Contender’s match. After winning the Gift of the Gods Championship at Ultima Lucha, Fenix would find himself unsuccessfully defending his title last week against the new Gift of the Gods Champion, King Cuerno. Ivelisse would defeated her Trios partners, Son of Havoc and Angélico, to become the #1 Contender for Mil Muertes’s Lucha Underground Championship. Immediately after winning the #1 Contender’s match, she would go on to face Mil Muertes, who would end up retaining the Lucha Underground Championship.

This recap is part of a series that is recapping the entirety of Lucha Underground. If you would like to catch up on previous recaps, click here for the recap of the last episode. Currently, Lucha Underground airs Wednesdays on El Rey Network, and is now available on iTunes.

Opening Segment
The former Lucha Underground Champion, Prince Puma, is working out backstage when he is approached by Pentagon Jr. According to Pentagon Jr., they are going to be partners tonight, and Puma will help him keep breaking bones. They have a brief fight backstage which ends in a staredown, and Prince Puma walks off.

Johnny Mundo vs. Killshot
We have not seen either of these luchadores since Season 1, and Killshot did not even have a match at Ultima Lucha. Johnny Mundo, however, got the pinfall over Alberto El Patron (thanks to the help of Melina), but after the match, Mundo was thrown through a window. Killshot has been impressive since his debut in the Trios tournament, but he has a tough challenge ahead of him in the veteran experience of Johnny Mundo.

The referee gets knocked down for a short period of time, giving Mundo the opportunity to hit Killshot with a low blow. Mundo takes advantage of this, and hits Killshot with the End of the World to pick up the victory. Winner: Johnny Mundo

After the match, Johnny Mundo calls out Mil Muertes, but is interrupted by “The Machine,” Cage. Cage also calls out Muertes for whenever he is healed (Muertes has a sling on his arm after Pentagon Jr. broke his arm), then challenges Mundo to a match right now. Mundo tries to attack Cage from behind, but Cage tosses Mundo around, sending him fleeing to the back.

Backstage Segment
Sexy Star is held captive by Marty “The Moth” Martinez, who has gone completely insane (if he wasn’t insane already). Martinez tells Sexy Star that his sister is going to appear soon, and Sexy Star will “spread [her] wings.”

Video Package
We see a video package for “The Darewolf,” PJ Black, who is making his debut tonight in the Temple. PJ Black is a thrill seeker, and his next thrill is competing in Lucha Underground. For WWE fans, PJ Black was formerly known as Justin Gabriel.

The Mack vs. PJ Black
The Mack was last seen at Ultima Lucha, where he would lose in an impressive showing against Cage. The Mack has the clear size advantage in this match, but “The Darewolf” will have an even harder time, considering The Mack has the agility of someone half his size.

PJ Black attempts a springboard forearm on The Mack, but The Mack counters with a stunner to pick up the victory. Winner: The Mack

Video Package
We get a brief look at a new female luchador, Kobra Moon, who is self described as sexy, venomous, and deadly. She makes her debut in the Temple next week.

The Disciples of Death (w/Catrina) vs. Prince Puma & Pentagon Jr. – 3-on-2 Handicap Match
Although Prince Puma and Pentagon Jr. have tension between each other, they are going to have to work together to defeat the Disciples of Death, who have been very dominant since their debut, which includes a Trios Championship title win at Ultima Lucha.

Prince Puma hits the 630 Splash, but Pentagon Jr. tags himself in to get the credit of the cover over the Disciples of Death for the victory. Winners: Prince Puma & Pentagon Jr.

After the match, Pentagon Jr. attempts to break Prince Puma’s arm, but Puma escapes the attempt, and the fight ends at a stalemate.
